Joy Division - 30 years on

Posted by: Gary1064 on 17 May 2010

Any JD fans here in Naimland? I can't quite believe it but it's 30 years today since Ian Curtis died. I was only just discovering them towards the end and bought the albums in reverse order: Closer, Unknown Pleasures and then then Warsaw bootlegs. I suspect I'm in a minority as Closer is my favorite, but will be playing both that and UP today, to me they are both classics that have stood the test of time. Shadowplay is my fave track.
Cheers, Gary

Already 30 years ??? Brilliant music and the sleeve design of Unknown Pleasures qualifies as the best album artwork of rock.

Yes, agree with you about the packaging but was always baffled by the designation of the two sides; "inside" and "outside". Debated with friends which was the correct order to play them in but in the end it's whatever you prefer!

Unknown Pleasures,Closer and Still are among my favourite records. I have both LP and CD versions and the CD's sound better.By a wide margin.

You're not alone Gary I prefer and feel Closer is the better album but Joy Division were a special band, unique really, proven by us talking about them 30 years later.

Seminal stuff. I have the original LP's and hardly dare to play them.

Have you tried the recent remastered vinyl, they are rather nice quality.

Last year I travelled with a big JD fan to the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool. On the way up we diverted to Macclesfield, where we visited IC's memorial and then took a drive to 77 Barton Street. Having seen it in 'Control' it was eerie standing outside.

Whenever I want a dose of JD I gravitate towards/tend to pull-out the Warsaw recordings.

I guess you mean

# Vinyl (17 Sep 2007)
# Label: Warner Bros.
# ASIN: B000INAWHA

and

ASIN: B000INAWHK

I should try

They are exact replica's of the original albums on vinyl so those numbers you quote do not appear on the albums, but 2007 sounds about right for the release date. They released Unknown Pleasures, Closer & Still.
