Naim DAC and Apple Universal Dock

Posted by: Ricardo Tubbs on 09 February 2010

Does anyone uses the Apple Universal Dock in combination with the Naim DAC? I want to know if it also sends out the digital signal by usb to the Naim DAC. As a cable I use the original cable that comes with the iPod.

That won't work you need the proper naim ipod cable.

The standard Apple USB-dock connector lead will do.

I stand corrected. I didn't read the dock bit only the apple cable bit.

His question about the digi remains unanswered. In this config it is getting DAC'ed by the iPhone/Touch right? If not what is the naim cable for?

To access the ipod feature set via the Uniti commands. That cable and has nothing to do with the dig domain question that DD answered correctly. Any USB connect will do the job.

The Naim DAC and the NaimUniti are different–the DAC already has Apple-authenticated digital stream playback over the standard Apple USB cable (DAC converts to analog) whereas the NaimUniti with n-Link uses the built-in DAC of the iPod device.

I agree that it's not convenient for everyday use, but makes a good back-up; or to hear new music that your friends might bring 'round on their iPods. The SQ should be pretty nice provided the files being served are lossless. Naim went to a lot of trouble to make the DAC fairly unaffected by jitter etc, as I understand it.

Why? Why not!!!! Convenience comes to mind.

Or, if 95% of your listening was coming from a CDX2.2 or CD5XS connected to the Naim DAC, why would it be a bad thing to be able to connect the iPod/Touch to the DAC to make use of the iPods internal files, stream from another computer, or use it for Pandora, LastFM etc.....

I could see this as a very attractive feature for those who use the Naim DAC outside of a exclusively distributed set-up.

Dont forget that many who use the DAC will not use it as a DAC for a computer front end.

Don't forget that you can use the iPhone or iPod touch (with the correct application) as a UPnP or internet radio, Rhapsody, Pandora streamer, too....

Which UPnP app would you recommend?
