Music Room vs Hifi Corner
Posted by: Shayman on 31 August 2005
I notice the posts on the Music room are now taking a week to disappear from the bottom of the page whereas the Hifi Corner posts now disappear within a day.
The 7 to 1 seems perhaps a record ratio to me and may be indicative of how Naim is becoming a Hifi obsessive tweakers brand rather than the music obsessives preferred hardware.
As I understand it Naim's initial philosophy was to kick against what the brand is now quite clearly becoming.

Also some of the threads on here run to many pages, whereas the hifi corner ones often peter out quite quickly and are often deadly repetitive. .As Bill Clinton didn't say "It's about music, stupid".

It seems rather obvious to point out that increasing post numbers requires that people actually post.
There seems to be a generally poor response in the Music Room to thread starters. It may be a matter of taste or fear of negativism that prevents simple responses. (in agreement or otherwise)

Dear Nime,
At least no one is likely to get personally attacked here! Maybe its the adrenalin rush of the other place that makes people post there. Personally some of the nicest threads I been involved with were here, and often with just one other poster. They went on for weeks sometimes, and according to the viewing figures must have been very widely read. I do think many would simply prefer to read, and so I don't think the fact that there are many more posts in the HIFI room is necessarily that unhealthy! I am being so possitive at the moment! It cannot last!!~

Once upon a whatever I had a life/'music' was just an incidental background occurrence.
Then I discovered value to me of 'music' I love.
Later I discovered that 'music' might sound/feel better through certain boxes than through others. I spent a lot of wasted money/time testing this for myself, in different 'contexts'.
Not so long ago I rediscovered 'music' after a time (late 80s) learning about computers etc.
I have since found that there is a fair selection of cheap or overpriced equipment which helps recorded 'music' sound at its best.
It is a matter of personal conditioning/taste, but for replaying-recording vinyl I like LP12 or budget Pro-Ject setups, and for CD replay Marantz or budget Naim (ditto for amplification). Loudspeakers tend to be big, sensitive & cheap, or small and no longer in production.
It's the music that counts, which is why it is good on £9.99 portable radios.
If all that exists of good 'music' is compressed files sent via e.g. interweb, then so be it.
If sound available only on tape/vinyl, so be that.
If the music/recording-production etc is adequate, then even digital is very acceptable.
Which is why amongst myriad 'music' interests I like funny Kaiser Chiefs.

After I realised that my system was as good as it was likely to get without serious audiophile obsessiveness on my part (and $/£ I don't have), I relaxed; and now just enjoy the music. I do occasionally post in Hifi Corner, but only when I feel competent to do so (99.44% of posters there know WAY more about the "hobby" than I do); whereas I am a 100% expert on what I love musically.
I came to see the audiophile aspect as a kind of danger...I realised that, for me, Naim System 1 (or $/£ approximate) is all that's needed to project the music mojo into my sitting room.
Please know that there is no criticism in my remarks above...For those who love the analysis of how a CDS3 sounds different from a CDX2 (or whatever), and have the $/£ to pursue same, all the best to you!

....!
Could not agree more!
Get a set that is good enough, and forget getting the upgrade bug, but just make sure you get to the system you can live with for a very long time in fairly short order. Once the upgrade bug bites it seems to stick around, which is a proper pain. I went from CD3 to CDS2 in one go, by sheer luck, and from Nait 3 to 52/ 180 [later getting the 200 due a to a forced sale of the least significant part], and I can't see the set altering now. The 52 was paid for with the sale of my five string bass, made for me about six years earlier, and so just beautifully run in for its second owner...
