Stand - Speaker interface

Posted by: i am simon 2 on 18 October 2002

Dear all

I am realy happy with my system at the moment, hence my recent lack of posts.

Having had a hicap on loan from a friend (on the 42.5) for a few days, this confirmed that I do not need new speakers (they can do stuff that I was not previously aware was possible from such a speaker). My nex HiFi purchase will be a hicap, when funds allow.

In the menatime I would like to perfect the set up of the system. The last 6 months has seen me improve the cable dressing with large benefits to the music, and speaker position is the best I have had to date, but here is the question.

How can I create the best interface between speaker and stand.

I used to have the speakers sitting on a 2p piece under each corner, on top of the stands.

Recently I swapped this for small felt pads that are stuck to the stand, this improved the mid and top end of things, but the bass is a bit one note-ish.

Are there any spikes or cones that work well between the speaker and stand, or should I just remove the felt pads and replace with blu-tak or similar?

Any suggestions?

Simon

I'm sure it depends on the speaker/stand in question, but I've always found blue tack to do a great job.

I seem to remember someone selling something called "Black-tac" a few years ago. The claims were that it had better sonic properties than the standard blue-tac. I can't comment either way, having never tried the stuff, but you could try to find some using www.google.com

Blu tac
It´s very easy to check if it´s an improvement.
try it and see what you think.

cost almost nothing and might do a difference/improvement dependig on your room and stands/supports.

I´ll do it, know that definately might be worth a try from my own experience.

I had excellent sonic results using down pointed cones under bookshelf speakers on very heavy stands. Blu-tak by comparison was less lively and muddier in the bass.

However, it made the speakers unstable (I mean vulnerable to being knocked over), and since one sits near a doorway, I went back to blutack.

Another thing you might try for fun: a piece of toilet paper under each corner.

The Ruarks might have slightly dirty bottom end when compared to speakers of a higher caliber, but do you realy think I need to wipe their ass?
