Trade in or Private Sale
Posted by: Dave Hartley on 26 January 2004
I'm thinking of upgrading my CD3.5 to a CDX2
What amount could I expect as a trade in or as a private sale for the 3.5 ( 3 years old )
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
S/H mint CD3.5 go for about between £500 to £600, private sales will always get you the most cash if you can find a buyer,
eBay is always worth a try..

Hmmmm
If you're buying a new CDX2 then I'd certainly ask what the dealer will give you in PX before you dive in and sell privately. They aren't really allowed to give discounts but you might be able to negotiate a very "favourable" PX

It annoys me when I see messages asking, "I'm trying to sell this thing, so how much should I charge?" It's obviously a thinly-vieled attempt to slip by the forum's edict of "no buy&sell threads". If the person really wants to figure out how much to charge, he can easily check out the numerous internet fora devoted to this task.
If you're trying to sell something, please check out the appropriate area on http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/. It seems to have an ever expanding volume of this kind of traffic.

Dave,
I sold my six year old CD3.5 last night for £475 cash. Given that this is only slightly less than half what I paid for it new I don't think this is too bad. I did try advertising around the £600 mark before Christmas and got no takers so I guess the key is to be sensible in your asking price and expect to come down a bit. Also bear in mind that a new CD5i can be had for around £900.
Regards,
Tom

Colasblue,
Your statement that 'they aren't really allowed to give discounts' could open a can of worms. Under EU law every dealer is free to decide his own price and attempts to prevent discounting are punishable by enormous fines and even criminal sanctions in some countries.

David is right - it is illegal for manufacturers to tell shops what they can sell their products for. I'm not sure how many companies have been prosecuted for "price fixing" - I recall that Volvo cars were fined a couple of years back.
They also tried to do away with "recommended retail prices" (RRP), so "suggested selling price" or something crept in in its place.

Mike, it annoys me too. I've paid good money to advertise my mint-condition LP12 Cirkus/Armageddon/Aro - so far without result though. Why should people get away with it?

Mike,Chris,
The question was asked without any intention to annoy members of the forum. I had no idea of this edit, so my apologies...
I will take a look on the Pinkfish URL.
