Other Turntables?
Posted by: JohnMak on 27 April 2003
Are there any NAIM users who own or have tried turntables other than Linn. E.g. The Nottingham Spacedeck as mentioned in another thread.
I note the Michell Gyro SE has been getting a lot of very favourable comment recently and is far less expensive than the Linn.
Anyone ever tried it?

JohnMak,
a good place to start your search may be this Systems Analysis thread, I know it is a bit long as lots of mrmbers have used it to record system details but I think after a bit of browsing you will be able to gather what types of TTs users favour.

Instead of the Gyrodec, try the Mitchell Orbe, which is a very good.
The SMe 20 & 30 are good as well.
The Roxsan was quite a reasonable match as well

I have the SME 10. I found it more musically involvoing and incredibly rythmic compared to the 20 and 30 although the bigger SMEs are more detailed. In a comparison, I found the 20/V to be more revealing of detail but seemed to lose contact with the music -that's the only way I can describe it. The V arm could be a factor too, IV.V is supposed to have more rythm, pace etc. The 10 responds well to other upgrades (cartridge, preamp) so I conclude it is different to the more expensive 20 and 30 rather than inferior.

John,
I have owned a Roksan Xerxes for over 15 years now. The TT works very well with Naim amplification and I have been very happy with it.
I did audition the Linn when I purchased the Roksan but my preference was for the latter.
It has been through many upgrades since I purchased it and it still sounds fresh after all this time.
Regards

My thoughts don't count either but with Dynavector amps the Well Tempereds are superb.

There are other turntables besides Linn? I had heard a rumour about that but I never believed it.Huh, well you learn something new everyday.

I had a Gyro (QC, SMEV) which sounded fantastic. I kept the arm and upgraded to an Orbe . IMHO a gryrodek offers fantastic value for money. Its also easier (and cheaper) to set up and maintain than a Linn. IMHO I also think it sounds better too (I`d better duck!)

John--
There a variety of turntables other than the Linn LP12 that are enjoyed in conjunction with Naim systems.
Some of those that I've actually heard that work well in the context of a Naim system include the Rega P9 (though not the newest version), the Roksan Xerxes X, the Well Tempered Classic (and its forebears), the Michell Gyro, the NAS Spacedeck, and others.
Some that do not appear to give their best in Naim systems include the VPI's, Basis, SOTA's, and the like.
Turntables can be very difficult. Try to find one you can actually listen to and buy it only if you like it. Simplistic, I know, but worth remembering.
Best Regards,
Bob Edwards

The Spacedeck has great bass, fast but really, really extended.
The Rega P9 works extemely well in the context of a Niam system - especially the new version.
More words of wisdom, eh Bob?
