A query about 24 bit DACs

Posted by: quincy on 27 October 2001

I intend to hook up a Teac DAT machine to the system. The converters in the Teac are,I believe, 20 bit.

Would there be any advantage in taking an SP/DIF cable from the digital out and plugging it into a 24 bit DAC before sending the signal to the 32-5 ?

The increased jitter from the SPDIF is likely to bugger things up, and most DAC's don't use their full resolution due to poor / cheap clock design.

Try it though, it might just work.

The DAC is a Midiman Flying Calf

DAT? I know a lot about these creatures.
I think your question is really about what external DAC will sound better than the Teac internal DAC. I don't know. But don't let things like no of bits fool you - only 16 are needed in any case and less if using an oversampling DAC. Any decent DAC will reclock the input to reduce jitter to miniscual levels before the D/A so the interconnect itself should not be a concern.

The Flying Calf might sound different, but it's not as good as it could be...I've got an older (original) Tascam DA-30 myself; it actually sounds better (more musical, better fundamentals) than its replacement (DA-30 mkII) on playback--I don't record in the analogue domain into the DAT (ol' Pro Tools 16-bit interface does the trick instead--also better on playback than its more expensive 24-bit sibling).

David

I intend to hook up a Flying Calf 20 bit ADC to a Midiman mixer and record, with a stereo pair, some acoustic guitar onto the Teac.

Any thoughts?
