nVi connection via the DVI socket
Posted by: Consciousmess on 12 December 2009
Hi all,
I've chosen to buy an n-Vi and this is due to arrive in the next couple of days. I will be using it with the n-SATs, n-CENT and n-SUB, but I'm slightly perplexed about the DVI connection.
If I use the DVI connection, is it the same as what my monitor uses into this computer? In other words, would I need a monitor cable and plug my n-Vi into the PC-in in my plasma?
Many thanks for your help here.
Jon

You could do that.
But probably best to get a dvi to hdmi (assuming your plasma has hdmi) or obviously if your plasma has DVI just get a DVI to DVI lead.
FWIW I personally prefer the component out on the NVI.

OK, thanks Gary!
Can the n-Vi potentially be upgraded as well? I noticed it has a digital out, so is this where the DAC would go followed by e.g. a NAC202 then an e.g. NAP200?
These are just thoughts I have, but again I thank you for your help.

The NVI does have digital out so yes you could attach a DAC.

I don't follow this forum every day, so you'll forgive me wondering whether this thread is a wind-up or your previous one was (which i presume you asked the mods to delete).
Either way, my advice is to stop spending. For six months at least. difficult, I know. But it might give you time to think.
cheers

After everything, you're thinking about upgrades already...??
I'll be direct, in a spirit of best intent: You need to get help Jon.
I really, now, think you should have a break from round here...even stay away from computers if need be.....
I wish you the best.
Steve.

Not really.

No. Not funny at all, actually.

The guy is an adult and allowed to ask questions and indeed allowed to make his own decisions and mistakes, hounding him for it is pointless.
We all make mistakes we all get obsessed and indeed we all have hobbies. I have 4 computers, laser printer, wax printer, inkjet printer, A3 inkjet printer, 2 Nases, a 16 port gigabit switch, apple tv, 200 quid modem, 2 scanners etc etc, could well be seen as over kill for a home set up.
There is not one man out there that is not obsessed about something. I guarantee it.

We're not hounding him, garyi, just helping.
I don't know what kit Jon's got left, but so long as it plays music, my advice would be to live with it for six months at least. He really does need help, as do most of us, to overcome an addiction/obsession. Meanwhile, by all means, soak up the advice so that limited funds can be wisely spent when circumstances start to settle down.
Cheers

Hi guys,
This is my scenario. My obsession and desire to get the top rung of Naim caused my other half to walk. My bubble burst and because I was ignoring her in every decision I made she had enough and walked. I am now in a state where I'm putting my life back together again and I have sold all my electronics - losing substantial amounts of money, but to me that is immaterial now.
For that reason, with the spare cash I have and yes it is spare, I've bought an n-Vi instead.
I'm not going to go out and kit things to the max as I'm using the money I have to get my life back together. It could be over 3 months in selling this house for which there are so many expenses.
I have always valued advice from this forum and regarded everyone in it as a community. I'm also not expert in audio-fidelity and know this forum is.
I'm looking forward to starting all over again and feel partially liberated, so if I had an idea of the road I could take the n-Vi down, that would give me something I enjoy. Upon arrival of my n-Vi et al., I am expecting a sheer drop in sound quality I was used to with my CDS3/555PS+252+300, but it has been a real wake up call to me.
Please at least give me that.
Sorry for rambling about my issues, but I just thought I'd clarify what people are mis-inferring.
Many kind regards,
Jon

The nVi is like the Uniti - a one box do it all - I'd leave it at that. The upgrade path makes no sense to me - if you bought a DAC then you'd need to send its output to a pre and its output to a power and then you're wondering why you ever bought the nVi ...
So if you have bought it then simply listen to it and accept it for what it is ... it is like my Linn Classic movie system which I seldom use, but with better sound quality.
When building a hi-fi separates system, we always go for the best source this is not the nVi. Naim never intended it be so.
So I'm not criticising your purchase, but I am saying don't even think about upgrading - just enjoy what you have. Make sure your music collection is nicely stored in alphabetical order and then work your way through it - listen to each album in turn and you'll realise just how enjoyable music rather than hi-fi is. Do the same with your movies? This will cost you not one penny of extra cash, but it will bring you great pleasure.

By far the piece of equipment that gets used the most in our house is the NVI. It has a mac mini connected to it with XBMC on so all video/tv shows/BBC iplayer passes through it.
It sounds excellent and the trouble is people on this forum are too snooty about it all. For everyone else out there the NVI is an awesome and expensive product. Its not in anyway a let down from anything else.
I'll tell you something else as well, when an uber high end naim system is sound strident on the ear making it bleed, an NVI is really quite soothing!
Incidentally, and I don't know if this would cause an NVI and a naim dac to explode or cause a new universe to be born but why not digitally output from the NVI into a naim dac then feed the output into the analogue of the NVI for playback, could that work?*
*Actually perhaps not thinking about it.

Doesn't work Gary, apparently...Someone posed the same question the other day and Naim answered saying if the n-Vi is playing a disc the other inputs won't work....

Yea that occured to me at the time of writing!
Could do with a monitor button that might work then, hell of a way to spend 2 grand though haha.

Hi Don,
I'm due to have the n-SATs n-SUB n-CENT.
All this is arriving on Saturday coming and my n-Vi is arriving shortly after. I noticed that the n-Vi can be bi-amped.
Am I correct suspecting this?
On top of this, what is the purpose of the digital out from the n-Vi if Naim didn't intend the item to be upgraded (as implied by ROTF)?
What does it output through the digital - the front stereo or the 5.1?
Sorry for questions that may seem trivial, but I thank you in advance.

Jon - the digital out can send either 2.0 or 5.1 selectable via one of the menu settings. Not sure what the use is on the n-Vi with its internal processing.
n-Vi upgrading. You can add an external amp such as the 150 or 200 - its a nice little upgrade for music and movies. In the past i've run mine with both a 140 and a 250. The 140 was a good match with the n-Vi and drove the front n-Sats well. You can also then turn off the internal front amp (menu setting) to give a small improvement in SQ.
Its worth feeding the n-Sub with both high level feeds off the speakers and using the .1 output from the n-Vi. Use the .1 for movies and the high level for music.
Enjoy the n-Vi - its a great little box and like Gary ours is used every day. Still think its fantastic for movies.
See you Sunday
