135s - serial numbers

Posted by: blockat on 27 February 2004

Could anyone explain why the serial numbers of pairs of 135s can be quite different (i.e not consecutive)?

For example there is a pair on eBay right now numbered 98020 and 101283. Is it likely they would have been supplied originally by Naim as a matched pair?

perhaps i'm just unusually imaginative but I can think of a lot of reasons;
1. somebody had a four pack or six pack, sold them off, pair by pair, but paid no attention to what the serial numbers were.
or 2. a store had multiple pairs of 135's and didn't pay attention when they sold 'em.
3. Maybe naim or one of the distributors ended up with an odd-ball, serial number wise.

I don't think it is a big deal. i think the main thing is to just get them. they are a wonderful model of amplifier.

Thanks - these are good points but I suppose the question I'm really interested in getting an answer to is whether Naim would have supplied the amps as matched pairs - or is there so little difference between the amps that any 135 will match with any other - assuming similar vintage and/or state of service history.
I am intrigued because one of the 135s I mentioned above on eBay has the adjacent serial number to one of my 135s - which I bought new as a pair from a dealer!

I'm only guessing, but I would expect that they were sequential numbers. I've just bought a secondhand pair and they are sequentially numbered, ***676 and ***677 say. Interestingly, I saw another pair on eBay that were the next two sequential numbers in the series, like ***678 and ***679.

So I would assume that they were normally manufactured in pairs with sequential numbers and, not only that, but it seems like they did production "runs" of them whithin the same sequential number series.

your situation is
my / your pair were ordered at the same time as another pair from the same shop so the shop took delivery of 2 pairs made at same time hence following serial numbers
the other pair were recently sold so this buyer must be selling strait away

John,

On occassion I have seen and am aware of individual 135s being sold for use in home theatre systems for use with the centre channel. It may be possible that this is part of the origin of the amps.

It would have been about 1 year ago, there was seller on eBay offering a single 135 that had apparently beeen purchased and used in just this fashion.

I would expect that since the 135s in question were manufactured in 1994 that they will be very similar in sound and could quite concievably be a matched pair.

Cheers
