New AV3?

Posted by: GeraldUK on 12 April 2009

Sorry but i may be a ranting slightly after a glass (or 2) of wine in front of a bluray dvd. We have have quite a lot of choice of HD Av/ DVD receivers now and given i am a hardy Naim junkie all i want is some HD decoded sound tracks and a bluray player from the green goddess - am i asking too much ? I already own a pioneer bluray player and really want to stick to naim given my hifi (is there any other ?) Hook a brother up !

Cheers Neill.

Yes, I had picked up murmurings of that...Although, to be honest, show me a AVR release these days that isn't buggy or requires firmware updates soon after release....Even BDPs seem to be the same. It's as if Joe Public is doing the guinea pig work for the manufacturers I sometimes think.....!

Besides, and lets not forget, could it be any worse a situation than any Naim device of late that has software in it...!? Winker Eek

The 888 seems the logical fit, though I'm not sure of the realistic time frame. I think WhatHiFi are getting hold of one soonish....There's a couple of guys on another AV forum seem to be going the same way, although they have raised questions how it's going to fit in with Naim amplification....??

what hi-fi did the review and loved it. Its in this months issue in the Uk although I have not checked there website for the review.

My own thoughts are it looks better in black and looks a serious bit of kit. I run a bryston five channel amp and If I got rid of that this one box would do everything. its really the sort of product naim should have been developing.

That's the 600 you mean - they haven't yet seen the 888 processor have they...?

But yeah, the 600 is certainly looking a well developed piece of kit....And yes, cool in black. Least it won't stand out against the Naim stuff too much...! As for Naim missing the boat, well, we all know that now.......

For example, is Naim committed to AV?

If they are not, fair enough. They are a business and, if they do believe that hi-fi is their core business and wish to focus exclusively on that or don't think AV offers the profitability they are seeking, then no argument from me.

HRC99,

I decided last Fall, looking into adding Blu-Ray to my AV system, that the answer is no (especially in the US market after the debacle of the n-Vi)

My main (Naim focused) AV system September 2008

* AV2
* 150
* 175
* NACA 5 cables for the three front channels
* 05 tuner/with HiLine into the AV2
* Audience PDC for the Naim gear into 20 amp dedicated circuit
* Naim Ariva speakers for the fronts / Naim n-Cent for the Center- Rock Solids for the rear channels
* Denon 3910 DVD player
* Salamander Designs Synergy Double cabinet
* Direct TV HD DVR + Apple TV
* Panasonic Pro 50" Plasma (ISF calibrated by Robert Busch)
* Panamax Max PRo 5500 for the Plasma and DVD player

My main AV system late October 2008 (Naim speakers still in place)

* Denon 5308Ci AV receiver
* Furman Elite 15 DM-i for the Denon
* PlayStation 3 for Blu-Ray playback
* all HDMI cables from DVIGear
* Cardas Golden Reference speaker cable for the three front channels (termed both ends with Naim DualPlugs)
* Naim Ariva for the fronts / Naim n-Cent for the Center- Rock Solids for the rear channels
* Denon 3910 DVD player
* Salamander Designs Synergy Double cabinet
* Direct TV HD DVR + Apple TV
* Panasonic Pro 50" Plasma (ISF calibrated by Robert Busch)
* Panamax Max Pro 5500 for the Plasma and DVD player

Bottom line - system sounds great (break in took as long as the Naim kit), Blu-ray looks incredible and all switching by the Denon makes life super easy.

I suspect many customers have also pulled or soon will the same/similar trigger. I'm super happy with this arrangement.
