Seminal Metal Al***s
Posted by: Sloop John B on 15 March 2009
Young Sloops birthday rapidly approaches so I thought to do my bit for the ailing economy and record industry in general I'd buy a few cds for his 13th birthday.
He's in a metal stage at the moment, started off with Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold (not the worst) has moved on the Iron Maiden (via his brother in laws lp selection).
His old man can provide Lizzy, Deep Purple and even Rainbow.
Over to the eclecticariat for some suggestions.

I know a song about Slipknot - please click here.
However, if metal is your bag then my suggestion would be the doom metal band with a sense of humour Cathedral who herald from Coventry (a place I was once sent to). As they progressed they became a bit more psych metal and veered away from the extreme metal sounds.

The Ethereal Mirror is usual regarded as their best elpee, but I prefer Caravan Beyond Redemption so called because the band were Sabbath fans and the album title is derived from Planet Caravan off of Paranoid. Recorded at the world famous Chapel Studios in South Thoresby, Lincolnshire in the second of the two main studio rooms (both of which are available for use by any aspiring band and contain state of the art kit). The studio houses a former Masonic Chapel and is one of the few fully residential high standard studios in England. Please don't hold it against Cathedral that the Arctic Monkees and The Darkness used the studio next door - the lads from Coventry were there first. Caravan Beyond Redemption, was like many of the groups elpees, re-mixed in Birmingham. My favourite track is the superb Captain Clegg with lyrics straight form the Hammer Horror film about Dr Syn (the Scarecrow) - super vocal performance by Lee Dorian (ex-Napalm Death) - please click here to hear.

I also liked Cathedral's last elpee The Garden of Earthly Delights.
Other bans that have metallic leanings and are worth a spin include the rather fine Cradle of Filth. Also he may like Bauhaus. If it is classic metal then as well as Deep Purple and Rainbow - great bands - then what about some Atomic Rooster - OK, it is not a laugh a minute, but the songs are fantastic and Vincent Crane's organ is magical at times: Death Walks Behind You - sees Vince ably supported by John DuCann, at his very best.
I'm not so enthralled by the Scandinavian bands like Entombed or Mayhem - in fact Mayhem and Burzum are best left alone, for obvious reasons.
Or just blow his mind and buy him a copy of Scott Walker's Tilt.

Montrose by Montrose was definitely ahead of its time. A very underrated and influential band. Iron Maiden and Saxon have covered them.
A good Effort
But Not A Good As This
A classic album contains Rock Candy, Rock the Nation and Bad Motor Scooter.
If its seminal your after
Doro Pesch
Warlock - Rare Diamonds is a good album

Nine Inch Nails 'The Downward Spiral' (1994) (the original edition is cheaper).
It is an album I would strongly recommend, but would note that it does have very explicit lyrics.
It does have 'Closer' which has the chorus 'I want to f**k you like an animal', and although I am sure Slipknot have similar lyrics, Trent Reznor sings them a lot more clearly.
If you are comfortable with him listening to such lyrics, it is an album that bridges the 70's metal, and the bands from this century. It is probably a little more accessible to someone coming from the current bands.
Not a band I am a fan of, but I would have thought a album Black Sabbath would probably be a possibility, but I am sure others can recommend one.
Other albums to consider might be:
Metallica 'Metallica' (1991)
Motorhead 'Ace of Spades' (1980)
AC/DC 'Back in Black' (1980)
Marilyn Manson 'Antichrist Superstar' (1994) (again explicit lyrics)
Something by Led Zeppelin (maybe)
Rage Against the Machine 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992)
Maybe something by Guns 'n' Roses, but again not a band I can really comment on, also Nirvana 'Nevermind' is a possibility.
I worked with a young actor from the age of 11 to 18, and saw him start liking bands like Linkin Park, and move on to bands such as The Smiths, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, so I am trying to think of bands he liked when he was that age. When he was 17 I took him to see Robert Plant and The Strange Sensation, he was blown away, to see a real living 'dinosaur' playing songs that were more than twice as old as him.
I would love to recommend some Tool, but I think it is not something that is accessible to that age (or any age for that matter).
Perhaps - A Perfect Circle 'Mer de Noms'(2000) a side project from Tool's vocalist (again explicit lyrics).
Hope some of that gives food for thought.

Master of Reality is an excellent record, but any of the first four elpees are worthy - though not quite up there with Deep Purple (probably the best rock band on the planet) and Atomic Rooster.
Personally I can't stand Guns n Roses, US Grunge Nirvana or Mötley Crüe, but to prove I'm not against US metal, you could try Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation or Secret Treaties are excellent: and don't forget Alice Cooper, his early records are remarkable, but even some of later stuff like Trash and Brutal Planet have their moments.

Albums that cost me my hearing:
UFO - Stangers in the Night
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
Black Sabbaf - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Budgie - Bandolier
I could have mentioned Vardis, Praying Mantis and the Tygers of Pantang...but I suppose they'll get the lions share of the vote anyway

If you want him to develop a liking for intelligent metal (not a term that is often used with the genre) then Tool, Porcupine Tree, System of a Down are definitely worth a listen. IMHO Tool are head and shoulders above everything else out there.

Although ROTF's recommendation of Cathedral is a good one. Many of the doom bands from UK don't get much attention but are very good. My Dying Bride probably my fav of the lot.
Post rock bands like Mogwai and Isis are also amazing and should be given a spin too.

I wholeheartedly agree that Tool are 'head and shoulders above everything else out there.'
Tool 'Lateralus' is one of my two favourite albums from this decade, the other being far from metal. I only hesitate to recommend it, as like a couple of others on this forum have commented, we all had it for a long time before we could listen to it, but maybe at 13 there will be less prejudice. It might just click straight away. '10,000 Days' and 'Aenima' are also very good, perhaps a little more accessible, but not as rewarding in the end.
Their videos are quite amazing too directed by Adam Jones, their guitarist, and former special effects artist working for 'Stan Winston's Special Effects Workshop' on 'Terminator 2' among other things.

...Not sure if they are strictly metal but Van Halen's debut should please .....and (not unlike Porcupine Tree) mebbe's Muse would impress in a sort of metal way?
Less well known are Nine Black Alps but they make a canny racket!

I can only echo the Tool recommendation. Although I wonder sometimes why they are categorized as 'metal'. Regardless of categorization, their music is amazing.
Other 'metal' bands which I would recommend:
Jane's Addiction
Korn
Pantera
Rammstein
Smashing Pumpkins

Great thread, but a dissapointing lack of NWOBHM (as Sounds used to call it)
Of the new stuff Mastodon make me smile, not sure how serious they are.

Budgie, Black Sabbath, Rush, 80s Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Incubus, Sky Eats Airplane

Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains are more grunge than metal, but theirs is the thinking man's rage.

Slayer! Iron Maiden!!!!! Ok, I'll stop now. PM me if you need a list of recommended albums.

Disappointing that people don’t know the meaning of the word ALBUM or SEMINAL.

Slayer - "Reign in Blood"
about as seminal as metal gets

Good point well made Fatcat.

As Ghom suggested, Slayer's 'Reign In Blood'. Also consider:
Slayer: Decade Of Aggression, Seasons In The Abyss, South Of Heaven
Metallica: Kill'Em All, Ride The LIghtning, Master Of Puppets
Megadeth: Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?, Rust In Peace, Countdown To Extinction
Anthrax: Among The LIving
Iron Maiden: Live After Death (the album I credit as getting me interested in music in the first place)
Jane's Addiction: Ritual De Lo Habitual
Faith No More: Angel Dust
It's well worth mentioning 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull -a well documented influence on Iron Maiden.
The temptation with this sort of list is to branch off on to many tangents, just as I and I'm sure many others here have!
The likes of Pixies (Surfer Rosa, Dolittle), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Mother's Milk, Bloodsugarsexmagik) Killing Joke (both self titled albums among others)
There's plenty more but I'm stopping myself for now!
Slainte SJB on this day!

Hmm – bit muesli so far. Why not try this:
Black Metal: Mayhem – De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. So the story is this. Half way through the recording the bass player, Varg Vikernes – a church burning neo-nazi murders the guitarist Euronymous – a Satanist, manipulative, really nasty piece of work who you definitely wouldn’t put on your Christmas card list, ostensibly in self defence because Euronymous intended to torture him to death and video the process but really because of money, an argument over which was the next church they would set on fire and because Euronymous was part Lappish. Meanwhile the vocalist Dead, who used to throw pigs heads into the audience at gigs and fortify himself by sniffing from a jar containing a dead crow committed suicide with a shotgun. Euronymous found the body, took photos that later appeared on the cover of another album and made necklaces out of the bone fragments of Dead’s skull. Rumours that he made soup out of his brain are false.
The replacement singer Attila Csihar was a bit operatic for some tastes – he probably belongs in a Funeral Doom band.]
Black Ambient metal/Death Noise: Deadwood - Ramblack
Blackened doom metal: Gallhammer –III Innocence
Black Doom metal: Skitliv - Amfetamine
Death/Doom – Thorr’s Hammer - Dommedagsnatt
Brutal Death Metal – Aborted – Strychnine 213 (They’ve also done some melodic Death Metal which isn’t as good)
Viking metal – Jotunspor – Gleipnirs Smeder
Dark metal ambient: Nordvargr - Pyrrhula
Sludge Drone: Sun O))) – The White One
Sludge metal: EyehateGod – Take as needed for pain
Stoner metal: Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the deaf
Grindcore: Napalm Death – From Enslavement to obliteration
Napalm Death – Time waits for no slave
Crust/Deathgrind: Extreme Noise Terror – Being and nothing
Splatter Death Metal – Carcass – Symphonies of sickness
Power Violence – Man is the bastard/Bleeding Rectum - Man is the bastard/Bleeding Rectum
Crossover Thrash – Municipal waste – Hazardous Mutation
Metalcore – The Cro Mags – Near death experience
Metal/Hardcore/Reggae – really – Bad Brains – Rock for light
Deathcore – Heaven shall burn – In battle
Neue Deutsche Härte – Rammstein - Herzeleid
Industrial Black Metal – Hecate - Hecate Jacks Off The Jackal

I might be a bit conservative in my tastes, but I think even at 13 I liked music made by people with at least a mental age in double figures.
What worries me is that I own one album in the above list, but I only like one track on it, and I doubt I have played it more than a couple of times since I bought it.

Well my name it is Dai Young
I’m the King of Welsh Goth
The village I come from
Is near Abersoch
I was brought up on Bauhaus
And black bedroom walls
And I had my first Snakebite
When I was in halls
Now the graveyard is calling
The sky’s getting greyer
I’ll drink the warm blood of
The Borough Surveyor
And I’ll murder the verger
I’ve seen how he gawps
And I’ll write on his headstone:
“Here lies Jones the Corpse”
Now my overweight girlfriend
She sits and she crimps
Her mother’s convinced she’s
Communing with imps
Her brother’s alright though
He’s a good lad is Wilf
‘Cos he’s into Placebo
And Cradle Of Filth
At my gig up in Butlins
The Redcoats complained
They tried to remove me
With bottles they rained
But for the first time in history
I didn’t run and hide
And the Scousers in shellsuits
Had Goths on their side
Now this Land Of My Fathers
It don’t suit my needs
I’d rather be some place
Like Bradford or Leeds
Where the Gipton teenagers
Could meet in my shed
For advice on mascara
And all things undead
Now my left index finger
Is nine inches long
It’s hovering over
A world that’s gone wrong
Ask me to Prestatyn
And that’s what I’ll do
And we’ll all die together
And Dylan can’t sue
