Seminal Metal Al***s

Young Sloops birthday rapidly approaches so I thought to do my bit for the ailing economy and record industry in general I'd buy a few cds for his 13th birthday.
He's in a metal stage at the moment, started off with Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold (not the worst) has moved on the Iron Maiden (via his brother in laws lp selection).
His old man can provide Lizzy, Deep Purple and even Rainbow.
Over to the eclecticariat for some suggestions.

Can't miss out Eddie Vedder on the ukulele front. Which has described, in jest, as speed death ukulele, when he played 'Soon Forget' live.
By the way, has anybody mentioned Tool yet in this thread? Tool fans are always trying to hide their BRILLIANCE under a bush, and always forget to mention them. I expect I did the same in any previous posts.

quote:Black Metal: Mayhem – De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. So the story is this. Half way through the recording the bass player, Varg Vikernes – a church burning neo-nazi murders the guitarist Euronymous – a Satanist, manipulative, really nasty piece of work who you definitely wouldn’t put on your Christmas card list, ostensibly in self defence because Euronymous intended to torture him to death and video the process but really because of money, an argument over which was the next church they would set on fire and because Euronymous was part Lappish. Meanwhile the vocalist Dead, who used to throw pigs heads into the audience at gigs and fortify himself by sniffing from a jar containing a dead crow committed suicide with a shotgun. Euronymous found the body, took photos that later appeared on the cover of another album and made necklaces out of the bone fragments of Dead’s skull. Rumours that he made soup out of his brain are false.
The replacement singer Attila Csihar was a bit operatic for some tastes – he probably belongs in a Funeral Doom band.
Next to Mayhem, SHINING is another shocking band....
I personally find their "appearance/performance" utterly disgraceful and horrible, but the music from Shining for example, has awesome parts...but nothing for easy listening...
Since I believe in God, I can hardly tolerate the evil in their vibes...

I understand your reservations about black metal - on the one hand, I can't condone arson, murder, fascism etc, but on the other hand, there are certain thrills from listening to Burzum et al that are separate from the notoriety of Vikernes etc. "Filosofem" is the point where black metal meets Tangerine Dream, the eerie soundtrack to a bad dream.

The rest is loud noise.
What's wrong with noise?

Perhaps a bit soft for the metal label, but what a great intro Led Zep's IV & Rush's A Farewell To Kings provided me with to heavy rock too many years back!!

One of the best hard rock compilation albums known to man is
Disc: 1
Banstead
Winter
Broken Wings
Friday 13th
Tomorrow Night
Nobody Else
Devil's Answer
Sleeping For Years
Death Walks Behind You
Breakthrough
Break The Ice
Black Snake
The Price
Decision/ Indecision
Disc: 2
Head In The Sky
The Rock
Close Your Eyes
Time Take My Life
Stand By Me
Breathless
People You Can't Trust
Can't Find A Reason
Save Me
Ear In The Snow
Never To Lose
Take One Toke
All Across The Country
Moods
Tell Your Story
O.D.
This compilation kicks off with the doom laden Barnstead from when Carl Palmer was in the group and moves on to organ-led classics such as Tomorrow Night and, one of the best singles ever, Devil's Answer. The second CD opens with Head in Hands and takes the listener through many an organ-grinding bass riffing rocker, finishing the CD debut of Decca single Tell Tour Story and its haunting b-side OD.
The tracks on this compilation are all remastered and the sleevenotes are fascinating and detailed. It covers the band's golden age and, IMHO, it's a clue to the answer we all chase.
Probably along with Deep Purple, the 70s rock band that captures my attention the most - sure I liked Zeppelin, Sabbath and many of the other metallic rockers mentioned in this thread, but Atomic Rooster were really special.
If I understand the world Seminal then you are looking for the group the others followed and to a large extent this is it. Atomic Rooster didn't follow the RnB blue-print they were apart and quite groundbreaking.

ROFL

May not be all about boffing dead virgins or simplistic heaven-hell discourses.
There's intelligence to it and its a good clean production.
Hey, did anyone mention the self-titled Rage Against The Machine Album (self-immolating monk on the cover)?
That is one album that helped us sell active SBLs like HOTCAKES in the 90s...

A little unfair, sir. Metal has moved on enormously since the days it consisted of inane major key power chords and moronic lyrics about getting laid delivered by permed gentlemen in tight spandex trousers.
In fact, I would go further and say that it is the most progressive (with both a capital and small P) musical genre of the moment, with some thrillingly original and eclectic musical fusions being produced.
If young Master Sloop has an ear for experimental and avant-garde metal, I would heartily recommend the following albums:
SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM: GRAND OPENING AND CLOSING
More an avant-garde progressive band with metal influences than the other way round - musically brilliant and with hilarious dada-ist packaging to match.
UNEXPECT: IN A FLESH AQUARIUM
Sounds like three bands playing at once - incredibly complex neoclassical/metal/folk mayhem.
GIANT SQUID: METRIDIUM FIELDS
The slowest, heaviest, grungiest space-rock imaginable, like a fusion of Black Sabbath and Hawkwind. Brilliant!
DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA: DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA
Metal meets swing jazz, and sparks really fly!
SEBKHA CHOTT: any album
Ever imagined seminal seventies proggers Magma gone extreme metal? Here's your chance!
ROLO TOMASSI: HYSTERICS
Amazing teenage band from Sheffield, crossing extreme prog-metal with punk, neoclassical piano, lo-fi eighties indie, electronica and more. Truly demented!
STOLEN BABIES: THERE BE SQUABBLES AHEAD
Metal meets European cabaret music, with an overdose of accordion and even some hints of reggae.
VIRGIN BLACK: any album
Not quite so avant-garde, but a true fusion of classical music elements, Gregorian chant and doom metal.
LUMSK: ASMUND FRAEDEGJEVAR
Wonderful fusion of Norwegian folk/rock and doom metal, with plenty of extended instrumental passages.
THERION: VOVIN
Superb classical metal, with full orchestral arrangements and an epic choir.
ATROX: any album
Can you imagine Yoko Ono freaking out in front of a virtuosic, knotty jazzy metal band? Now you don't have to!

Sloop
That’s too many metal albums for a 13 year olds brain to absorb. Why not let him listen to one album a week, starting with the oldest.
Assuming control of the other 5 albums has obvious benefits.

How is Master Sloop getting on with his presents? Looks like a nice selection in the end.
It would be interesting to hear some feedback on the forum from someone of 13 years, I suspect the majority of us on here are several times that age.

For what its worth here is a 13 year olds view of things: (cost me €10 phone credit - the mercenary cad)
Disturbed- Ten Thousand Fists
I Think this is an absolutely Amazing Metal Album from someone I had never heard of before.
Montrose-Greatest Hits
It takes a bit of getting used to but when you get into it is really good. Really good guitar riffs and the voice is like Bruce Dickinson’s(Iron Maiden) Voice
Paramore-All We Know is Falling
Pretty Good, the voice goes well with the music but the bass guitar is everywhere and the bass is too loud as well.
Metallica- Master of Puppets
As I had heard this album before I Knew what was coming but now that I hear it again it is amazingly deadly
Led Zeppelin
Not really what I expected but good all the same. It shows how metal got to where it is now.
AC/DC- Back in Black
Classic AC/DC with that bluesy style metal that everyone loves. Savage Stuff
