Ron Toolsie: CDS3 Report Please

Posted by: Chris Bell on 20 August 2003

Ron,

So how is the CDS3 sounding? I listened to Jim Levitt's recently and I was impressed with the player's incredible depth and texture. Mine is supposed to arrive after Labor Day, so I must hang on your words for till then.

PS: 552 warming up nicely...have you ordered yours yet?

I have no real report per se to offer at this time. In my rush to get the CDS3 head unit united with its soulmate the XPS2, I had NANA ship it to me the day it was received there without the customary pre-ship audition, which would have added an additional day. In a very uncharacteristic fashion there was a glitch with this unit and it was returned to NANA after a couple weeks. I should have my replacement unit in the next week or two and the full report will of course follow. By then of course you will have had time to wax eloquent about your CDS3/552 Big Grin.

My 552 has not been ordered. YET. This I believe will happen some time (early) next calender year. As mentioned in another thread, my upgrade path has crystalized out to firstly the 552, then two more 500s to return to active mode. There is no doubt that the DBLs seem more cohesive and balanced when driven passively with a single 500 then they did actively with 500/300/135. But with it comes the loss of quickness, microdynamics and some purity as compared to when I had the 500 driving the tweeters actively. Passive is great, but active will/should always be the last and final upgrade. Which means the 552 first as the 52 would finally be out of its league if 3x500 were wagging its tail.

please allow me to help out. without 'gushing'.

They're really, really, good.

Those who've lived with the CDS2 "might" recognise some differences when enjoying the CDS3.

Not sure understatement is becomming of me. I continue to try, though.

I trust your unit is not to far away, Ron.

CDS3

Rico, though this thread was started by Chris for Ron's comments, for the benefit of those who'd like to know, I would be interested in your comments, since you own the 3. Cool

What differences from the 2 did you experience?

Gush please. Big Grin

Good listening; the music's groovin' frightfully more.

Regards

Philip
