The old grey mare (Burndy)
Posted by: Arthur Bye on 29 May 2002
I saw this on Ebay
grey burndy
I've managed to accumulate 5 leftover grey Burndy's in upgrades over the years (2-52/2-CDS2/1-CDS1). I figured they had no value, but I couldn't see throwing them out.
There are 8 bids on this Burndy on Ebay. What use can an old grey Burndy have? Am I missing something here?

In an active system where for eg the 5 pin SNAIC is being used to interconnect the supercap to SNAXO the grey burndy is a big improvement and at £30 is cheaper than a new black (£250)
The black is an essential upgrade though and in performance improvement per £ terms is actually good value
PS I've got a 52 grey burndy knocking around, if any unsuccesful EBay bidder wants to make me an offer

I think the pin configuration in each burndy is different. So you can't use a 52 burndy for a s*cap to Snaxo.

Query: I have a 52/scap/135s....I was toying with the idea of upgrading my grey burndy to a black one. is it worth the cost?(about £280)Is the black burndy much better? and would I be able to get anything for my old grey one?
Advice please....

I can't say much, but I have tried a grey and a black SNAIC between CD3.5 and Flatcap. The black SNAIC was really a significant improvement! And in this case the lead does not transport any music...

I have a grey Burndy in the cupboard. I am not tight assed enough to try and flog it. If anyone needs it I'll swap it for a decent CD or LP.

When you modify the Burndy for the CDS1 to CDS2 upgrade is the modified Burndy identical to an XPS Burndy?
Arthur Bye
It also seems to me that there are at least 5 versions of the Burndy. I think Martin Payne posted them a while back.

No: but you can use it to power the CDS2 or the CDX with the CDPS. (If I am wrong please correct me!) And it's not possible to power a CDS1 with an XPS...

It is indeed the Burndy for CDS2 > CDPS connection - I'll email you.
Sorry Charlezz - see above.

CDSi+CDPS
CDSii+XPS (or CDX - but not CDPS, Arthur)
CDSii+CDPS (or CDX - yes, Jun, you're right)
52+Super (or 52PS)
SNAXO+Super
cheers, Martin
P.S. anyone else get the NaimMarket e-mail from the Audio Works? I gave them a call on a hunch and managed to score a black 52 burndy for half price. Result!

The black Burndy's are more current and reputed to sound better.
When I upgraded my CDS1 with a black Burndy the difference was immediate and significant. More detail, higher resolution, better high freq, better low freq. Improved over 2 weeks too.
The upgrade on the NAC52/Super was not as significant but still worthwhile. Kind of like cleaning your ears.
When I upgraded my CDS2 from grey to black there was little discernable difference. I haven't switched back to tell for sure but it seemed like there was better resolution. Marginally worthwhile upgrade.
Don't know about the Snaxo grey or black Burndy's but I imagine there is some improvement.
Not sure what the internal wiring differences are. Externally the black and grey cables seem identical, except for color. All of them seem to need about a 2 week break in.
