Dónal Lunny

Sloop John B recommended Donal Lunny's Journey album to me (thanks John) - a best of compilation of Donal's work - this is a magnificent collection. I have listened to it three times already (only got it on Friday) and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who enjoys folk music.

Donal is from Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Andy Irvine gave him a bouzouki in 1970. He first recorded with it on Christy Moore's Prosperous (1971) on which Andy played mandolin and harmonica - from this they founded Planxty (1972 -1974). With Christy, he went on to create the Bothy Band (1975-1979). In 1979, Planxty reunited, with Donal producing their three albums. Then in 1982, he and Christy Moore formed Celtic rock band: Moving Hearts, whose three studio albums Donal produced. Coolfin is his latest group.

Donal Lunny is without doubt one of the best producers (in all senses) of trad Irish music.

I don't think Christy Moore was ever in the Bothy Band (the best band ever IMHO), though

Nigel

You are absolutely right - don't know where I got that idea from.

Thanks - best regards, Rotf

I like what I have heard/seen of Mr Lunny when going through 'Bringing It All Back Home' CDs/TV shows etc a little while back.

Yes, it came out a couple of Christmases ago _advertised as the Best of Donal Lunny and you thought uugh! Best of! along the lines of the best in the world ever albums.

Journey a much more apt title, it really is a great selection as Donal is more the Brian Eno of the genre to Christy Moore's Bowie.

I love cathain (when). The term raw energy is over used but this is primitive and propulsive stuff.

Totally with Nigel re the Bothy Band.
