Alex G, Simon P, David S, anyone: What is this?
Posted by: ErikL on 04 February 2004
Lately when going to sleep I've been listening to a pretty trippy radio program. What would you call the majority of this stuff? Any recommendations? I'm just guessing that David Slater, Alex G, and/or Simon Perry might have some knowledge to drop. A sampling from last night's playlist:

Nick,
I know, and my apologies, that the list is a bit random. Not being familiar with stuff like this, I wasn't sure if there was a common thread throughout. That, and I miss bits and pieces while brushing my teeth, scratching my ass, folding laundry, etc. Acid Mothers Temple was played a hair before midnight and I was snoozing by then.
I will say the tracks made up of nothing but fog horns, creaky oars, drops of water and 2-3 notes from a synth do annoy me, but I do like the overall ambient mellow feel of a lot of this program. A few key recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Excellent selection Ludwig, as Nick says very chilled Ambient. I don't have the new Anouar Brahem is it good, I've got his earlier album 'Mahar' with Shaukaat Husasain on tabla on ECM and it is great. I like Blemish BTW.
Good stuff.
ps. Have you tried Maher Shahal Hash BAz?

Yes the Susumu Yokata, intially left me cold but a few listens and I am really getting into it.
Another great one off that list is Jaga Jazzist, its heavy work sometimes but again a nice mix of modern jazz with phat beats, always a good mix in my opinion.
If you like either of the above you will also like:
Dub Tractor: More or Less Mono
Cinematic Orchestra (any)
Bonobo: Animal Magic
Baby Mammoth: One Two Freek
St Germain: Tourist
Although to be fair some of these recces are a little more mainstream to either of Susumu or Jazzist

Chums,
Thanks for the reco's. When Gary mentions Cinematic Orch and St Germain that helps, as I have albums from both (and would agree they're a bit mainstream).
Now, if I were to say that I enjoy Boards of Canada, Godspeed, The Microphones (new live album BTW), Mogwai and now Lambchop when unwindwing or falling asleep, does anything else in that playlist scream "gotta try it!"?
You're all so swell.

The classic Gregory Issacs albums are probably 'More Gregory' and 'Night Nurse'. 'Skylarking' is an excellent compilation of Horace Andy's Studio One recordings. Typically there are several compilations on different labels called Skylarking, but it's the studio one version you want. Blood and Fire have also released several Horace Andy discs: 'Good Vibes', 'In The Light' (and a Dub). Excellent material, well presented and good quality vinyl as is usual from that source.

Nick
No doubt you were numb after the Spurs 3-4 fiasco & Razor getting the 'Boot' from Celebrity. On the bright side, Gooners were cheered up by these 'minor' events as they mean such a lot to your success starved fans

Manchester City, or the motley crew from IACGMOOH?

A nice mix of ethno=ambient-electronica=post=rock.
Looks like ResonanceFM or a Wire sampler?
I'm not too keen on the wibble-wibble-plonk-plop school of electronics, I like something with a rooted beat in it.
btw the new Electralane album out now/soon. look out for it.

Nick,
VW is well. Given my limited funds lately, I've mostly been making lists of all sorts.
All,
I'm amazed by the breadth of musical knowledge on this forum. I imagine stacks of CD's and LP's acting as walls in your homes and 2 sources of different tunes pumped into your ears 24/7.
I now need to perform some research based on the reco's.

The Boards of Canada mystify me?
Can anyone remember anything of their album 1 minute after listening to it?
I'm with Crackhaus on this - Blame Canada, the best country north of America.

OTT - IACGMOOH (well you have to, don't you)

I quite like boards, but must admit they took a while to get on board for me.
Also like global communication, and United Future Organisation, and Lucky Pierre. Super Numeri and Plone also have some good stuff, but all of it took time as there dosn;t on first listen appear to be too much going on.

Based on initial samplings:
Jaga Jazzist- Reminds me of Koop; okay then
David Sylvian- I couldn't take a whole album of his voice
Anouar Brahem- Very nice worldly jazz sounds
Biosphere- Yes!!!
Electralene (the new one)- Does the Alex G tampon ad thing, which I need given the grey skies
Gregory Isaacs- Not my focus here, but noted
Stars Of The Lid- Lovely soundtrack for solo interplanetary space travel
Richard Kirk- Grabs my attention, but I need to test more
Anja Garbarek- Special order so I didn't bother; noted
Mum- Love it
Dub Tractor- Unavailable
Bonobo- Hmmm, undecided for now
Baby Mammoth- Just not my thing regardless of merit
The Buddha Bar/ Del Mar/ etc stuff isn't my cup of tea so I didn't read the thread.

Algers, probably Mum. It's very very nice based on what I sampled.

Air's new oneAnyone given it a spin?
Also, if for whatever reason any of you would like to listen to
this radio program by DJ Riz, you can stream it about the time you're waking up and getting to work. If you send a request by email, give me a "shout out".
AlexOnce when talking about B&S, you said it gives you the limp-wristed fields of rapeseed, gentle breezes, and bubbling brooks feeling. I responded saying it sounded like a tampon ad, ol' mucker. Electralene did the same for me when sampling.
Posted on: 08 February 2004 by ErikL
Nick,
Imagine the scene of a typical tampon commercial- fresh breeze, tinkling brook, butterflies, sunny skies, playful kittens- it's a good thing, and takes me away from the grey, pissing skies where I live.
In the next week I plan to pick up Electralene, Mum, Anouar Brahem, Biosphere, Richard Kirk, and Stars of The Lid. As always, the input here has been much appreciated.

Ludwig,
There are many excellent recommendations on this thread already. You could also try Laika, The Notwist, Markant, Ovuca and the first (i think) Astrobotnia album. However, you probably have plenty of stuff to be going on with for now...
Cheers
Simon

Simon,
I really enjoy The Notwist. Great stuff.
I'll add the other four to my "stream-some-samples-somewhere-before-adding-to-my-wish-list" list. Thanks.

Ludders,
Also try "Explosions in the Sky" (like Godspeed but a bit more accessible) and "Labradford" (the albums are quite varied so stream a selection and see what you think, these guys are among the originators of post rock).
Simon

Oh yeah! I bought an Explosions In The Sky album recently- it's excellent, just as Monsieur Gerrard described. Now this Labradford outfit is something new, so I'll need to sample. Thanks.
