Has anyone got one? Has anyone got any other electronic reader and what are your experiences?
Kind regards

Love it. I'm reading a lot more books than I've been in the past few years because it's so convenient. Best feature is the long battery life... It's about 20 hours. Really a plus on a transatlantic flight, instead of carrying a briefcase full of reading material, the Kindle is easy to pack.
Also, very easy to order books online. 30 sec later and they are in the Kindle.
For fans of classic literature, there are a lot of selections in the public domain and available for a dollar or even free. Got the whole Charles Dickens collection for a buck!
16 shades of gray scale, doesn't do much for the magazine experience, but for reading books, it's fantastic....
Very happy with the purchase after almost a year.

I'm sure it's good, and it does seem to be the best device of its kind out there right now. However, my gut feeling is it's still "bleeding edge" technology - in the age of the iPhone, Kindle looks like it has too many buttons, for my taste. I'm holding fire to see what other products come out over the next two or three years.

IMHO It is style over function.
Imagine sitting in the smallest room reading a book on Kindle, suddenly you look down and, horror of horrors there's no paper
In the old days you could just rip out a few pages that you had just read...
Kindle?
I dont think so

Is there a 'standard' format for these eBooks?
What happens in 5 years time when the market and the devices have evolved - will you still be able to read the books you've "bought" today or will your reader and software collection be obsolete ?
I can see the appeal of these devices and the techno-nerd in me would love one ... but I know that the 'real' books I've got on my shelves should be perfectly readable in 5 generations time, never mind 5 years.

well that picture is an embarrasment. Twice as big as it needs to be. Clumsy, very clumsy.

I have to say this for me is one area where having the physical media in your hands is what it's all about.
Having said that i'd be interested in trying the Kindle or another brand when they make one that opens like a book with a screen on each page. The width of these things is too narrow for comfort.

Just how many freaking books do you need at once?
It possible to go holiday for 2 weeks or travel and take say 2-3 books without bringing the plane down.
A prime example of technology trying to find a product. IYAM , (I know your not).

Imagine a software glich toward the end of a fine story! Aaaaarrrgh
Horrible to imagine.
And, I rather like the look and effect of my bookshelves; rows and rows of the things make a room look relaxing and lived in imo.

Oh Yes! The smell too; I'd forgotten that for a mo'. The smell of new books is wonderful for me and is part of the excitement of a shiny, new unmarked volume in which the adventure is to be had.
Ps, I like books.

I bought SWMBO a Sony e-Reader a year or so ago. She absolutely demolishes books when we go on holiday & we end up with one suitcase for clothes, guns & ammunition etc. and one full of books.
It's a lovely device, very easy to read, rather neater than the Kindle, and books are easy to buy & download, the american sites being much cheaper. I normally wear glasses for reading but you can bump up the size of the text so they're not needed.
Does she use it? Nope...

I would buy one tomorrow IF you didnt have to read them (like a book).....by that i mean wouldnt it make sense if the story/book was read to you ? seems pointless otherwise to me you may as well take a book in the first place.

I think it can read to you. Take a look at the kindle demo on amazon and it shows the kindle doing that.

Probably the booze! But I find if I start to read a book, I have the attention span of a goldfish and before I know it I am off looking at something else. With one of these I might actually get through a book. Sounds like a great thing to listen to whilst sitting by a pool on holiday with a few beers.

i don't know - I can multitask - sun on back, book in one ear, music in another, beer, and a good view - sounds pretty good to me

The word spoken back on the Kindle sounded awful. If it was an audiobook the excellent but it just sounded like one of those computer generated speaking voices. Either that or they got Kraftwerk to do the voice over - not exactly full of emotion....... but its start
