Who is a good LP12 setup man? advice needed...!

Posted by: ChrisBathory on 22 May 2003

I've just sent my Troika away to Expert stylus to be 'seen to', and I'm starting to worry about the installation and re-setting up when it comes back...

I have previously tried (and failed miserably) to set up my LP12/Ittok/Troika satisfactorily. My old dealer, who used to set it up a treat, is long gone (West Midlands Audio for those who know)...

Over the last 5 years I've tried a couple of other local dealers, but I can't say I've been impressed (apart from the size of the bills!)...

Can anyone recommend a good man to set them up - preferably in the Midlands - but I don't mind a bit of travelling for a quality job...

Thanks!!!
Chris

Hi Chris,

New Audio Frontiers in Loughborough can be recomended with confidence although there must be someone closer.

Chris,

Tricky is spot on. Look no further than Derek Whittington in Loughborough, (01509) 264002. He really is unbeatable in the field of anything LP12. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else.

Colin Macey at Martin Kleisner Beconsfield but a 2 hour drive for you, however......

Chris,
I was at New Audio Frontiers at the same time Derek was setting up an LP12 and sat in on the final signing off with the owner of the LP12.

The man seems to know his stuff, to the extent that the effects of setting tracking height 'by ear' were clearly noticable/audiable. (Less surface noise when set correctly. I forget which cart./arm was being used.)

Thanks very much all - obviously lots of options for me to check out and follow up.

- Audio Excellence's Worcester shop has actually called me to offer the service that you described Garf. Given that they are all of 10 minutes away from me I'll probably give them a shot...

Can't wait for my Troika to come back - Expert Stylus have now confirmed the cartridge is basically sound but has a very badly worn diamond... I guess 16 years or so use is a bit much between services!

Cheers!!!

Hear, hear.

Four hours driving, many months/years enjoying. Colin is particularly good on the LP12; well worth the trek.
