rediscovering old treats
Posted by: scottyhammer on 01 January 2008
hi all,
just wondered if like me you have rediscovered old music which you previously wrote off......
an example for me is floyds the final cut.
in the past i havent really played it much and thought it as their weakest effort BUT recently gave it a spin and surprisingly i enjoyed it !
what are your old write offs rediscovered and why ??
happy new year. scotty

This works for all styles of musioc. As we get older - slower, more reflective, perhaps? - then things we did not once understand or enjoy, fall into focus and give tremendous pleasure, whilst other things seem not so engaging in some cases!
For me it took years to really get to like the late String Quartets of Beethoven, but now given a choice [among the genre] then I would take them first!
What is nice is to come across something unknown and it going straight into one's list of favourites! I recently have found that Carmen Pizzini's performances of Mozart's Piano Sonatas has led me listen to all of them, known and not known!

As a happy 50 something I can honestly say that I replayed the Final Cut last year and ...
I think it is their worst album - even age has not mellowed my opinion of it.
However I now enjoy Yes more than I have for a long time and also Led Zepplin are back on my CD
Best Regards

henners,
i agree that the final cut is probably the worst album floyd (or should i say waters made)
as the other band members were not happy about it.
but i couldnt even listen to it years ago and although it wont be played often i can now sit and play it without taking it off again within minutes.

I think when you accept it's a Waters album and not a Floyd one it's quite good. I agree it has not dated well though.
Off to give it a spin on my tt.

I know what you mean about rediscovering old stuff - I am getting so old that it is a pain to get up to change over the vynil so I tend to just listen to my CDs most of the time. But age also brings a bit more money so now I'm restockig my colection with CDs of my old vynil - just received from Amazon a trench of Pink Floyd from Piper to the Wal.
What a great surprise hearing them being played on my Naim kit - especialy Atom Heart Mother - this one really kicked in for me with me wondering what is the difference between this and contemporary classical music?
Oh yes - I have it - at least this had a tune in it. great, just warming up to put Meddle on now.
good listening for the new year

It wouldn't be much fun if we all had the same musical tastes, but I'm a massive fan of The Final Cut, since day one in fact, it bothers me not one bit that it's a 'Water's album', it's an amazingly powerful collection of songs that are highly emotive and which, on my LP copy, also happen to sound stunning on my Michell Gyro SE/SME 309/original Koetsu Black. I suppose it helps that I have a particular interest in the history of warfare (esp. WW2), but I find the music and lyrics and sound qiality utterly compelling and it is one of the first LPs on the platter when I buy a new piece of hifi. This LP would easily come into my favourite top 10 LPs.
