Upgrade PC new Mobo and CPU?

Posted by: BigH47 on 22 September 2006

I have a P3 PC running WinME and was wondering if it would be sensible to upgrade the "innards" ie new Mobo and CPU and ram to then run XP?
I am after suggestions as to what are the latest reccomended combinations.
If there are any shops in the south London/Surrey/Sussex area that can be praised, as all the shops I have used seemed to have closed soon after I bought anything.

Thanks

Howard

most of the time when I've looked to do this it's barely made sense, on a P3 most of the bits hanging off the mobo will be so out of date as to make them not worth keeping, e.g a decent sized hard drive (say 100gb) will only cost £50 now, whereas I'd guess your current hard drive is prob 10 - 20gb.

In my experience the only bits worth keeping are monitors, perhaps the CD drive if it writes, keyboard & mouse.

Would second Phil's comments most of the bits in the box would be obsolete. By the time you change teh mobo and cpu, you'll need new memory, a higher capacity power supply etc. In the end about all you can reuse is the case (aside from teh monitor and keyboard).
Have a friend who builds specials for video editing and such. His view is that for a bog standard PC he cannot compete on price with a pre-configured off the shelf model, and that's even before taking labour into account.

Willy.

I've been thinking along these lines too and have come to the conclusion that it doesn't make much sense. Have a shufty at http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Full_Systems.html where a pretty good system can be had for 500 quid or so.

Thanks guys I seem to have come to the same conclusion. By the time I have all the extra bits and pieces + OS I should be able to buy a new base unit.

Thanks
