Is there a Linn Users Forum?

Posted by: JohnMak on 10 March 2003

I hope I'm not our of order asking this question on this forum. I have searched the 'net and I can't find a Linn forum anywhere.

I bumped into a fellow at a party over the weekend and in the conversation he mentioned he had a Linn Active system (Genki, Kolector, three LK85's and Ninka's). We left the party straight away and went around to his house and played CD's all night. He just brought this system in Singapore recently for around GBP3,600. It was a fantastic sound .... much much better than my Sony TAE TAN 9000ES/Definitive Technology BP2000 system.

It has really upset me as I had pretty well decided my next trip to Singapore was going to see me buying the new NAIM CD5, NAC202, NAP200, HiCap and either Naim Intro2's or Linn Ninka speakers. This setup costs about GBP4,800 in Singapore.

The Naim system is about a thousand pounds more than the above mentioned active Linn system. Has anyone out there heard this active set-up
and if so, can I get any feedback on how it would compare to the proposed passive Naim system I was planning to buy??

Best rgds,
John McMillan

The other one, which I prefer, is:

http://www.topica.com/lists/linn/read

This tends to be more active and receive more up-to-minute information.

The Naim system you mention you wish to hear is rather unbalanced. You'd be better listening to a better source (CDX2) and spend less on the amps.

John,

I sympathize with your problems in that it is much harder, apparently, to audition stuff in Vietnam than in, say, London.

I'm wondering, however, whether reading and talking on forums will help you a lot making a decision about the sistem you want to buy. At the Naim forum most people will firmly recommend a Naim sistem. At the Linn forum most people will back Linn. So where does that get you?

What made you want to get a Naim sistem in the first place? Perhaps I missed part of your story, but have you ever heard the sistem you intend to buy soon, or are you just guessing it'll be to your taste, on the basis of what you're reading here?

Really you should let your ears decide. I know it's a lot of hassle, but the best thing would be to check out both the Linn and the Naim before you make up your mind. And make sure you don't listen to anyone talking about what's so god about these brands. Other people's preferences are completely irrelevant to your decision, though Andrew is right about the CD5, which would need a Hi-Cap at the least.

And the good news is, you have a pretty good chance of making the shortlist of the Nuño 2003 Award (due in August), so just keep it up!

Many thanks to those who have replied so far.

herm, the reason I have been thinking about Naim is that many years ago when I still have my LP12, Kairn and LKsomething and Linn SARA's,
I had another friend whose setup was exactly the same as mine except he used I think a Naim 32.5, SNAPS and a Naim NAP250. I always felt his sytem had more weight - until I bought a SPARK power supply for the Linn amp several years later. My friend in still has his Linn/Naim system and had never bothered upgrading. I like the timelessness.

I did hear the new series 5. CD5, Nait5, Flatcap and Intro2's in Australia on a recent holiday. It was musically enjoyable but had no bass .... to be fair tho', the dealer had the Intro2's away out in the middle of the room????

I was just so impressed with this active Linn system here in Vung Tau over the weekend. It sounded so "fast" and very detailed. I suspect if the guy wouold have sold it, I would have bought it on the night. I'm going to have another listen tho ..... without the Red wine this time. I just wich I could have the luxury af comparing active Linn with passive Naim.

Again, many thanks for the benefit of your experience.

Hi all,
Thanks for the info re the Linn forum.
I've just had two replies from their forum regarding my question about Linn active compared to the passive Naim system I was thinking about.
One was a pretty clear view not to buy without hearing first, the other was in favour of the passive Naim set-up. An interesting response.

Andrew Randall: Many thanks for your comment about using a better CD player. I will try to find out the price of the CDX2 in Singapore. Does this model still require a separate power supply? Looking at prices in the back of Hi Fi Choice I note there is quite a big price jump to go to the CDX2.

Does the CD player make a big difference. I have read in magazines that a CD player is only reading "1's and 0's" off a disk so can't contribute anything to the sound????? Again, no prospect of me checking this here as we only have Japanese CD players in Vietnam (and they seem to all sound the same to me)
I may be able to check this when I get to Singapore for a few days.
Cheers,
