Has the world gone mad?

Following on from the knife discussion, as luck would have it, I was attacked by a guy with a broken bottle last night. I was working the door of a fairly rough pub last night when I was asked by the door staff if I would eject a drunk customer who was being abusive to staff and some female customers at the bar. I politely asked him to leave at which the scrawny little git (aren't they always) smashed his glass and attacked me with it. I did a standard knife to the upper quadrant defence, perhaps a little more vigorously than was necessary, resulting in a sprained thumb for myself and a bruised forearm for him. Net result was I spent most of the night in a police cell, he walks away scot free and he's going to sue me for assault. He claims I attacked him unprovoked and he has witnesses - his drunken mates - to prove it,My lawyer reckons it's just a nuisance suit that will go nowhere, but really who needs the hassle? My job basically involves looking after people and keeping them safe but sometimes it really doesn't seem worth it. Looks as if I’ll have to retrain again. Always fancied being a social worker, but that maybe a case of jumping out of the frying pan into the fire?

I suppose it's more the fact that I spent a few hours in a cell that bugs me. It was vile, scary and deeply humiliating. I really would not want to be a criminal because having felt a taste of the law and not having done anything wrong it was horrible. I can't imagine how terrible it would feel to have done something and be facing a long period in jail. But maybe if I was the sort of person who would commit crimes I wouldn't care about the judicial process

You got it - they just don't care......besides, you can get porn, drugs, pretty much anything you want, inside and a heck of a lot easier than out on the street.....
Surely in your case though the bar staff would act as a solid defense witness ie. they're not drunk, or the little git's mates!
Sorry to hear about your incident and I hope it washes over quick!
Oh, and your right - the world has gone mad....
Cheers,
Ali

Grr.. stories like that make it very hard to be a decent liberal. Sometimes the gut intervenes and gives one (ok me) the feeling that the world would be a little less mad if the the shit-ette had gotten a good kicking.

You would think so wouldn't you? However all the bar staff who saw the incident decided that they didn't want to get involved so they made statements to the effect that they were elsewhere at the time. The other door staff were so outraged by this that they told them in no uncertain terms that if they were going to continue to treat us like this they would not receive any more assistance if they were threatened or things kicked off. Funnily enough they changed their minds and decided to amend their statements but by this point the bar owner had stepped in and gave the toerag that caused the problem a few quid to buy him off. Oh and he told me that my services were no longer required. I'm probably better off out of it

Dear jcs,
It is everybody's duty to act a fair witness, whether they like it or not. I think you can count yourself lucky that you will no longer be working with your irresponsible and careless bar staff.
The breakdown of respect runs in parallel to the breakdown in responsibility in my experience,
I agree with your premiss. Fredrik
