Trojan Compilations

Posted by: ErikL on 12 September 2003

Hello,

I was thinking this morning how the only Jamaican music I own are the Peter Tosh and Bob Marley albums you hear whenever marijuana is smoked.

Does anyone have experience with Trojan Records' compilations? I've seen the box sets pop up at every record shop I visit lately.

I'm looking to expand my horizons a bit.

Thanks.

I have the Tojan Dub compilation and it's quite good. Also worth checking out is Lee "Scratch" Perry, there is a 3 cd box called "Archeology" which is very good IMO.

These were on sale a few months back so I bought as many as I could carry. I don't think you can lose with any of them.

Soul Jazz puts out a great compilation, too. Start with 200% Dynamite

You also need to get some Linton Kwesi Johnson.

All this music is best heard in the summer on the patio with BBQ blazin. You don't need to be a dribbling stoner to like this stuff either.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Mike.. is the Trojan title you pasted above just an example, or the most recommended? Where would you say to start in the Trojan collection?

Give up - I can't get the picture on, but it's great. Honest...buy Young Gifted & Black

Just an example, Ludwig.
Each box covers a specific genre so it just depends what you like. Right now I'm liking UK Hits.

Is there a Trojan comp that's a "greatest hits, all genres" sort of thing? It might be best for me to take a broad sampling to start.

In addition, how is Madlib's "Blunted In The Bomb Shelter", also on Trojan?

Hi Ludwig,

For a good "dip your toes" insight to Jamaican Music try

Trojan UK Hits box set. (3 cd Box set)

This features the some of the big tunes of the three major styles. Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. It shows the changes from the faster ska beat to a slower bass heavy reggae style.

Young, Gifted & Black. (2 cd album, 50 tracks)

This again show the changes but starts off with pre ska track & has a few less well known tracks.

If you want a more in depth sampler of the styles, look at

Punky Reggae Party. (2 cd album)

This feature reggae from the mid to late 70's. Feature some big names & fine tunes.

Let's do the Rocksteady. Tjhe story of Rocksteady (2 cd album)

This feature a fine collection of music from around 1966 to 1968. It shows the change from Ska to reggae.

Rough & Tough. The story of Ska 1960 to 1966. (2 cd album )

This somes the changes from a US RnB style to early ska to big crossover ska tunes.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone have the Trojan Calypso box, and if so what are your thoughts? Thanks.

(Still) on order...

Trojan UK Hits
Madlib- Blunted in the Bomb Shelter

I have it, it's a bit of a mish mash but quite entertaining. Some of it is kinda comedy reggae. Honestly, if you only buy one compilation buy Young Gifted and Black

200% Dynamite

Peace to Mike Sae for recommending this one. It's killer. I've put the rest of this series on my wish list.

Hi

The Dynamite series is quality stuff.

There is a new set coming out on Soul Jazz called "Studio One Muzik City". This is a 4 cd set

Also check out the Trojan box set called "Muzik City, The story of Trojan". This is also a 4 cd set plus a booklet on the history of Trojan & a look at the various labels from the Trojan stable.
