Does Stageline work well with Shure V15VxMR?
Posted by: Eric Tang on 05 October 2003
I have NAC112/NAP150/FC2. Planning to restore my Thorens TD321/SME3009R with Shure V15VxMR. Should I choose Stageline model N?
By the way, after powered on NAC112/NAP150 (CDP is off), putting my ear close to the speakers (PMC LB1), I can hear small zeezee sound. If I connect speakers with Musical Fedility A120 Int Amp, there is no such zeezee sound.
What is causing the sound on 112/150/FC2 and how to fix?
Thanks in advance

Just to give you a start.
The "zeezee" noise you can hear with you ear close to the speakers is a NAIM thing. I can hear the same in my system and I have seen previous reports on this forum. The conclusion is "no big deal" just very low level noise which does not get into the music signal in any noticeable way.
On the Shure cartridge I seem to rememeber that being a MM design which means the "N" type stageline is the right one.
Go to this link on the Naim site and it gives you the output values each Stageline is aimed at

Thanks GeoofP.
Do you know if Stageline is a good choice?
I planning to buy one because of the spare port on my FC2. However, the extra cable from FC2 to NAC112 costs 50% of a Stageline. Stageline already includes a cable from Stageline to FC2, does it mean for the money I spend, 2/3 will go to cable with only 1/3 to the amp itself?

Brutally logical answer is YES I suppose, but I do not think you should consider it quite in those terms. Consider the following:
In common with Naim low level signal handling in pre-amps, the phono amp is kept seperate from it's power supply.
What this gives you is flexibility now and in the future. For example right now you have two choices:
Power the stageline from the 112 or power it from the FC2. The sound coming through will be a function of which you choose. Most people here would tell you the sound will be enhanced by using the seperate dedicated power supply from the FC2 and that you will really hear the difference.
In the future if you decided for say a CD5 you could power that from the 2nd output on the FC2 and plug your stageline back into the 112. It depends which is more important to you, Vinyl or CD.
Now say you do go the CD5 route you can also opt to bring another Naim power supply into the system in the shape of a HiCap (loads around 2nd Hand). Now you can swap the supplies around to decide which benefits most from the higher performance in the HiCap, the 112, the stageline / TT or the CD5.
So the seperate power supply approach has lots of flexibility which is difficult to price.
There are of course other makes of phono stage around but bear in mind you will still need a phono to din lead to connect it to the 112 which is about 40GBP from Chord I think, AND you will not be getting the best value out of your FC2 which must be worth something.
Bottom line you need to LISTEN to any phono amps you fancy to hear what you really think is right for you.

Thanks GEOFFP.
I think I will finally stick to stageline, because of getting the best value out of tye FC2.
The bad thing is, in my country Hong Kong, TT (& phono amp) is very rare nowadays. Shop will not set it up for audition.

Eric
