New ipods, what does everyone think? The new shuffle looks very good for running with…

Sounds like FINALLY they have sorted out gapless playback (though doubtless only on the new models and not a fix for the older ones). Still, better late than never.

No, the new gapless playback works on the old ones.

Download iTunes 7 and it will sort it out for you

Wonderful.

(Though downloading will have to wait for my new hard disk.... long painful story).

Out of interest, is it an all or nothing thing. I.e. is everything gapless? Because while that's a very good thing for opera (and some symphonies) it's much less good for others were a little gap is nice. What would be really nice would be the ability to control it - i.e. have settings unique to an album. Or at least turn it on and off on the ipod depending on what you're listening.

Still, mustn't grumble - I've been moaning about this for years.

Yep, just downloaded itunes 7, gapless playback at last, without having to re-import any cds - phew. Tam, it seems like it's only gapless where it's meant to be.

The bit that allows you to flick through album covers is pretty cool too.

The shuffle looks tiny, amazing really; though I think I prefer the look of the original nano.

Still no touchscreen ipod though, been lusting after one for months now!

Wha?
Gapless playback??!!
Downloading right now.
Wondering what I need to do to make my playback gapless... Is it in the instructions? Or does it automatically convert?
I expected that, if they fixed it, it would come in the form of an iPod SW update rather than on iTunes... Will have to see.

Relax David, it does it all by itself.

I'd got so used to hearing a few albums with unintended gaps on itunes, it almost seems strange now hearing them flow smoothly, if you know what I mean.

Ahhhh....
Connectedness, just like nature intended.
So right, Nicholas, it worked beautifully. Took some time to get my 1800 some songs checked and ungapped. Updated the iPod Video's SW while I was at it.
All working like a charm.
Finally!
Thanks for the tip!!!

Hey, Thanks Jon!! The gaps in playing back the Goldberg Variations have always been really jarring. . With currently installed programs on my PC (I know- a Mac is on my wish list), I generally leave well enough alone, and it might have been months before I stumbled on this development had I not read your thread

I've just installed itunes 7, and it really is brilliant. Looks new for a change, and now not only sorts out the gaps between tracks but automatically downloads all the missing album covers!!! Looks like you can back-up too back to the PC.
At last it's everything I wanted it to be.
There is definitly no equal now.

Rasher,

Does it download covers from songs bought from itunes or will it also do it from originals loaded directly onto your mac/pc? I've updated to version 7 and it has ungapped everything, but no covers. What do I need to do? I'm working with a Mac, so in theory it should be simple, even for someone of my limited technical ability!.

Hi Nic.

I had the same problem. Advanced > get cover art should sort it.

Steve.

Yeah, that's it. "Get cover art" and off it goes. It hasn't put missing album art onto my 30gb ipod photo though. I might have to do a full sync to solve that, or trawl manually. I've never bought a downloaded song - all my music is from my cd's.

Tam and others
Many thanks for pointing out the new Gapless feature in iTunes V7. Just finished downloading and seen it analyse and update all my cds. The best improvement Apple have made to iTunes. Finally able to enjoy the music as the artists have intended it.

Thanks and regards

Mmmm - 8gig Nano - very tempting... I might get one before christmas then...

The feature I like best is the album cover browser (the far right hand button on "views") which is like being at home and flicking through your albums (Stretch it nice and big with the grab handle at centre bottom), then just double click on it to play it. Fab.

Steve,

Thanks for the steer. Different problem now. It asks nme to sign in to itunes before it will allow the Get Artwork function, which I have done. Then it asks me to review my account details because it has not been used before. When I try to review the account it keeps saying that itunes is busy try later (and check my internet connection, which is fine). I know the password and account details are fine because I only reset them yesterday.

Is this because I have not purchased music through itunes, and only used original cd's?

Regards

Nic

nick, itunes int he last two days is getting rammed out of site, if you consider there are 70 million ipods out there, lets just say for arguments sake 1 7th of them owners is trying to play with the new features of itunes, well thats 10 million people trying to hit the music store.

You'll have to wait a few days.

If its an consequence, its not working for about 50% of users even though they can get on the store, and more importantly the old way of digging it up on google then dragging to the cover art window is now disabled, which is ultra crap as itunes only has a very very small percentage of the worlds music.

It sort-of still works, but has to be done one track at a time rather than selecting a whole album to copy onto. Life's too short for that kind of malarky!

I think album art is pretty badly implemented - in that you have to add the same picture to each track on the album if you want the art displayed - if there are a lot of tracks on a cd this can be a significant amount of space wasted - the more so over the entire collection. You would think there was a more efficient way of doing this.

Garyi,

Thanks for the reassurance that it is not just my ineptitude. I will wait a few days and re-visit the site.

And here's some technical info on the new chipset they're using.

MAJOR disappointment: Gapless is only for Gen5 iPods Frown

[expletive deleted]

That's low - and a crass attempt at forcing an upgrade. It's one thing not to put all the bells and whistles on the older ipods (as they have always refused to do), but this is, frankly, an issue of basically functionality and I can't think there's a technical reason why it can't be fixed for older models as well.

ARTWORK WARNING.

If you are using a PC iTunes needs Direct X 9 to work, this is a large upgrade if you are still using a dial-up connection.

I am having major problems with getting iTunes 7 to work on my PC. At the second attempt it installed ok, but now won't play anything from my library.
