How big is your's?

Just been on the Government website:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/actonco2/DG_067197

where you can calculate your Carbon footprint. Did the calc for the whole family.

Central Heating - 3.1 tonnes CO2 - Below average and that surprised me as this big old house is a pig to heat.

Appliances - 3.43 tonnes CO2 - Above average. Due to replace most of these soon which should help.

Travel - 27 tonnes CO2 - No public transport in this neck of the woods and I travel (fly) a lot for work.

Regards,

Willy.

Unfortunately, ours came out quite high (household taking the average up) due no doubt to our coal fire. We don't have gas in the village, I walk or cycle nearly everywhere, we share one very economical diesel car. Public transport is lousy around here and the car is used twice a day; for my wife to get to and from work. No sitting in traffic just two NSL country roads. Yet we still come out high...
The figures don't really speak IMO.

Heating = 2.64
Appliances = 1.66
Travel = 3.24

Total = 7.54

Surprisingly, one of the reccmendations was to consider a dishwasher. They reckon it's more efficient to wash one big load in a dishwasher than than several small loads by hand.

Shouldn't the title of this thread come under the 'woeful state of the English language' thread?

7.23, and that's with quite lot of flying. (I don't drive, which may help).

Need to buy a more efficient washing machine though!

Yup - it's the old Grocer's Apostrophe again!

It's a shame all the reading I get to do while cooped up in planes has done so little for my grammar Smile

5.2 tonnes for the household.

My lack of contribution to the 'Best Airline' thread I assume is the biggest factor. Not bad since we live in an old and cold house.

We too should apparently buy a dishwasher and a microwave, but sell the DAB.

Household: 3.43 (below avg)
Electrical: 2.23 (slightly above)
C02: 8.47 (about double the average). Two car household, higher than average mileage due to long commute for the other half. Bugger all public transport (rural). And a long haul flight this year didn't help!

It would be much more realistic if you forecast the forward carbon footprint of you, your family and seed for the next 20 years, then we can identify the truly extravagant CO2 emitters

My wife was gutted that she could not claim reductions due to her fanatical recycling.

The binmen will stop bothering to come soon.

Mine's terrible.........

Mine came out as horrendous...
Two big gas guzzling cars, a large house with an old boiler (heating furnace!)etc. HOWEVER some of the questions asked, such as "how many light bulbs do you have in your house?" are c**p. Although I must have something in the region of 110 bulbs, I doubt I ever have more than 12 burning at any one time.
I refuse to replace my boiler until it breaks - (bear in mind the carbon produced to make a new one) and I will not switch off my cordless phone chargers as it proves too inconvenient with 'phone flat batteries.
I also refuse to switch off my DVD recorder as it needs the time setting each time I want to record something which is not convenient either.

We could all stop travelling but then the airports, airlines, oil companies, hotels, tourist information staff etc. at the above, would have to be laid off. This would result in the world economy collapsing, which would mean the world would not have sufficient funds to investigate and rectify global warming anyway.

So, I propose driving my car(s), enjoying my holidays, supporting economies world wide, thus ensuring the economy does not collapse, which in turn will help to save the world.

That is, until China, India and the good old USA tow the line...........
