Any suggestions for keeping the sylus of the DV 17D2 clean. What is best to do, given its tiny size/

Thanks,

Jay

Or for the caked on crud use a short stiff bristle brush and a couple of drops of fluid cleaner. I'd recommend the Disc Doctor stylus cleaner for this.

For the hard stuck on stuff use Linn's green paper (very very fine glass).

I think DV recommend some form of liquid cleaner as well but not sure what and they don't seem keen on vibrators

Jaybar,

Do not use Linn Green Paper - anyone who recommends it doesn't know what they are talking about. This has been talked about for years.

Best to use a brush as Tom initially suggests, then you can use a bit of alcohol (very infrequently) but just a bit and to be honest given the 17D2 has such a short cantilever I woudl use just a drop.

ps. the best brush to use is a fine hair squirrel.

pps. for the hard gunk it might be better to use a putty type of compound - you can get it from ESCO

Who knows nothing at all having very little experience with hifi

Tom,

Using green paper can be bad depending the type of stylus you have, how it is bonded to the cantilever, profile, etc, etc. Prolly better to use something as effective but less mechanically wearing. But to be honest I don't give a monkeys what you use, its your needle not mine and if your dealer says do it listen to him it's your money, but I have never used green paper in over five years, i don't use the AT vibrating cleaner either. Theres plenty of info on this on the net from cartridge builders and the like

cheers,

Dev

Remember to wipe your bottom before flushing also Smile

Dev, whilst I agree with you about green papers - about as effective as the government's - squirrels and alcohol can also be a problem when combined.

A sable is the best soft brush, and that funny retractable thing I bought from Grahams 20 yrs ago with a useless mirror on one side, the best hard brush (largely for being short haired - try rubbing your legs the day after shaving them compared to a week later).

I emailed Dynavector about the use of vibrating stylus cleaners. I got a very nice email back from Pear Audio that said AT-637 type devices were fine for the DV10X5 (dunno about others in the range), so long as used dry, and only for 10 seconds at a time. What they don't recommend is the practice of extending the time to several minutes, as has been advocated by some people for other styli. Might be worth giving Pear Audio a shout, see what they recommend for yours. I also got a soft brush, as I didn't get mine when I bought my 10X5. However, it seems about as effective as blowing at your stylus.

The Zerodust is excellent. Used all of the other suggestions, but this is by far the best.

Seems to be a lot of conflicting information here. On the Dynavector web-site there are two cartridge User-Manuals in pdf format - they both say to use a soft brush for routine dust removal (not particularly controversial), but for removal of more persistent soiling -

The one for the 20X says to use a cotton-bud moistened with a drop or two of dehydrated Alcohol? - Ouch!! plenty of potential for cantilever damage or removal there then!

For the DRT XV1-S they say to use a short soft bristle brush moistened with a little Alcohol diluted 50/50 with distilled water.

I think I'd favour the latter, but take your choice!

I use the zero dust, and now I don't need anything else, its a bit pricey for a pot of goo, but it works really well.

Jay, i too have the dv17d and use the soft brush that came with the cartridge.
i use a DECCA carbon fibre/kevlar? pad to clean the records first (it works!); and occasionally get the AT-637 out with a dab of isopropyl alcohol.....i have the LINN green stuff but with this cantilever i haven't been tempted yet!

That'll be part of the Discwasher stylus cleaning kit then... I use one (and the Zerodust) and they seem to work well enough.

Garyi - do you press the stylus down into your Zerodust, or just let it rest on top? Curious as I'm a bit unclear on that!
