NAP140 unstable ??

Posted by: Alco on 24 May 2001

Hi folks,

My dealer is offering a s/h 72/140 combination,for 50% of its newprice.
Now,I just got me a pair of Linn Kan-ll's,and they are driven by a Nait-2.

To my surprise the Nait-2 is capable of driving the low-efficient Kan's, but I guess a 72/140 will be a (big?) improvement.
(mostly in the low-end area)

The only thing that bothers me is this:
I read a review in an old Dutch HiFi-magazine about the 72/140 combo.
The review said:"the only sad thing was the slightly uncontrolled bass" and things like
"a very musical combination, just too bad the company isn't able to make its 140 power amp
100% stable."

Are there any people out there who use a 140 with Kan's? what's your experience ?

Greetings,
Alco.

If you're used to driving the Kan IIs with a NAIT 2, you'll have no problems with the NAC 72 / NAP 140 combo (I assume these are both the same vintage).

Maybe they are referring to those daft enough not to use Naim loudspeaker cable.

THANX, Y'all !

In the review they used a Marantz CD-80 and a Linn
LP12/SME-V/Ortofon MC3000 as source. Speakers were Lyric-3 (??) The used Audioquest "Indigo" speakercable but in the end stept over to Nac-a5.

I'm using a CD-3.5&f/c myself and also use Nac-a5.
(though I must say that I'm also having fine results with my old Transparent "wave" cable, even thought it's only 2x2,5 mtr long)

Over the years I've used 140 poweramps to drive KEF, Tannoy, Rogers, Mission, Linn and Naim speakers. They drive Speakers such as LS3/5a's through to Linn Sara MK1's with ease. The only time I've heard of any problem with a Naim power amp on this front is when Litz cables, interwoven cables are used. Use A5 or RS cable or 79 strand(or even Linn!!!). smile
