Embarrassing music from the past

About a month ago I saw Joe Jackson play here in Toronto, and his warm-up act was "Mary Lee's Corvette". I learned that the leader of this ensemble, Mary Lee Kortes, wrote a song for Amy Grant's album Unguarded. Back in the 80's I listened to this album a whole bunch. Although I could use the excuse that my girlfriend of the time was really into it, I have to admit that I really thought it was well done. So I listened to a few samples from it, and just cringed.

This reminded me of a few other albums that I really enjoyed at the time. Another one was Sheena Easton's You Could Have Been with Me. When I listened to the samples from this one, I couldn't stop laughing. The backing vocals are especially precious. Eek

So what embarrassing musical skeletons do you have in your closet, or are you too upset to admit it?

BTW, one album that I thought might belong to this group, but turns out (IMO) has stood the test of time, is Missing Person's Rhyme & Reason. Although it's definitely timestamped in the 80's, it's still a great listen. Now I have to get myself another copy, as my original was on cassette. Red Face

I think buying George Michael's "Faith" when it was released has to count as the nadir of my music buying career. I see admitting to this as practice for someday admitting that I'm an alcoholic (when I am one, of course Smile) -- it's THAT painful.

OK - I'll come clean and disclose my purchase of Gino Vannelli's "Brother to Brother" album in 1980. But I'm not gonna admit to anything else!
Except for . . . Black Box "dreamland" Mad which technically is my fiancees. It still dogs me today, and she is not allowed to play it on the Naim.

Regards

Max

PS Mike, I"ll agree with the Missing Persons album mainly for the contribution of Zappa alums, Terry Bozzio and Warren Cuccurullos', but I'm wondering if ELP's "Tarkus" would fall into that same category as I really do have some fond memories of that album.

PSS I hope that I haven't disclossed too much

Replacing my vinyl collection, I thought I needed to get a CD copy of Steve Howe's first solo album Beginnings. I played this loads at the time and just dived in and bought it after not hearing it for decades. Mistake. Unlistenable. Not even funny.

God - you lot have GREAT taste compared to some of the stuff I have...

The worst items have got to be:
  • Henry Lee Summer - Henry Lee Summer (I was after the "Wish I had a girl" song for years and my Uncle brought the album back - it stinks!)
  • Muppet Show volumes 1 and 2 - so 1 has Mana Mana (think The Office) on it - but that's no excuse!
  • The best of Sam Fox - definitely no excuse - barring my first vision of her on Pebble Mill in all that leather when I was 12 - man, I had to get "Touch me" and "Spirit of the night"!!!
  • Rolf rules OK - Rolf Harris - as with the Sam Fox, another fairly lame cover of "Satisfaction" - he he he!!!

I think I've incriminated myself enough - there's probably worse lurking in my collection, but these are the really bad ones that spring to mind Smile

When the music's over turn out the lights
