Out of balance Pre amp
Posted by: ChrisM on 05 December 2003
Has any one had experience of a NAC 52 pre amp louder on one channel than the other ?
The one I have appears to pull the sterio image across to one side. To correct this the balance control has to be set at about 10 oclock (rather than 12 oclock). Also, when the balance is fully set to one speaker then the other, one side is louder by comparrison.
Interestingly when the mono switch is activated the imbalance is corrected.
Any advice / thoughts ?
PS the amp has just been serviced.

It can just be a room thing. Maybe your speakers are not in the same accoustical environment, one is more absorbing than the other. Check this and then make your 52 be tested by your dealer.

Thanks for the thought.
I have tested the rest of the system with substituting a different pre amp. It appears it is the NAC 52 that is suffering from the inbalance not the rest of the system.

What source are you using. If vinyl there could be cartridge problems.

On this pre-amp imbalance topic, there have been complaints before, and I humbly request naim to make a check on their QC. My 52 also is louder on the left brand new. But its too cumbersome to send it back to naim salisbury, so I have learned to live with it.

I got the same problem with my brand new NAC 252 too, the left channel sounds louder than the right channel, I just got it on last friday, and took it back to the dealer on the next day. The NAC 282 I have now--no problem at all.

I recently had the same problem with my system
and I assumed it was my NAC 82.
I substituted another pre-amp and all was well
initially until my supercap warmed up again and the imbalance returned.
Check out you power supply with your 52 before deciding to blame your pre-amp.
My supercap was due to be re-capped (nearly 10 years old) so I also sent off my 82 for it to be serviced.
I hope this helps.
All the best
