Go active or Supercap - which first

Posted by: Willie B on 07 March 2003

Current system is 82/hicap/250 fronted by Meridian 500/563 and with new SBLs ordered. As a next step I am considering either:

late 2nd hand supercap - £1700 approx, or

snaxo, hicap and another 250 to go active - £2000 approx.

Which is the better first move? - now seems to be a good time because so many people are upgrading to the new stuff that there is a lot of good used equipment available at reasonable prices. All advice gratefully received

Try a Naim CDX2 and 250 Mk2.

Get a Supercap. The 82 with a Supercap is another preamp entirely. I have demoed (a few years ago) 82 with one Hicap vs. 82 with 2 Hicaps vs. 82 with Supercap. As they say, there is no substitute. Going active is good too, but I would go Supercap. Of course if you had an indulgent dealer you could try both and hear which you preferred.

Tom, Dev and Jay - thanks for the helpful comments - | guess the best way is to go for the supercap first and then keep the hicap to put towards the active system later. Many thanks
