"Dem Disc"

What piece of music (and in what format) would members use to dem their systems?
Please DON'T go for Donna Summers' "I feel love" or say "everything you play".
Mine is 12" single of Seccret Ceremony (Theme from Brond) by SCALA (Bill Nelson & Daryl Runswick)

  • Anything by Shirley Collins - e.g. March the Morning Sun - Shirley Collins and the Etchingham Steam Band.

  • See Emily Play by Syd Barrett and The Pink Floyd

  • Everything is AOR by Half Man, Half Biscuit

  • Sinfonietta by Leos Janácek conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras

If the listener still wasn't happy then Hello Goodbye by The Beatles

Interesting selections, ROTF. What format would you use?. I'm interested to see the proportion of CD's v Vinyl. I don't expect too many eight track cartridges, however.

Many years ago, when selling an Armstrong 521 amplifier, I used Jupiter from The Planets as a Demo, and played it loud. The poor chap was so moved he could hardly count out the five pound notes.

I don't suppose that's what you mean though is it. I like to use a Kevin Ayres track from the Bananamour album, When Your Parents Go To Sleep..... The brass on it is astounding.

My recording of Shirley Collins with the Etchingham Steam Band is on vinyl. Most of my collection of Shirley's music is on vinyl - with the exception of the "Within Sound" box set which is on CD. I do have a couple of cassettes, which were sent to me by Shirley. I must transfer them to CD.

Syd Barrett and The Pink Floyd is a 45 r.p.m on vinyl (nearly 40 years old and still sounds as fresh as the day I bought it).

All my Half Man Half Biscuit collection is on CD.

I was giben the Janácek on cassette many years ago. I recently re-bought it as part of collection of Janácek's orchestral works on CD.

These days I mostly buy CDs - it is just easier - ultimately I think I prefer vinyl; the Rega P9 (now I've got it set up properly on the Corian plinth) is a magnificent.

He had great taste in guitarists as well, Ollie Hassel (?) Mike Oldfield, and at one stage he had a band that reunited Andy Summers with his old boss, Zoot Money.

I only picked up on Mr Ayres from seeing him on The Old Grey Whistle Test; poor old Whispering Bob never got the credit he deserved, in his time he introduced some truely great musicians to British ears and eys.
