Praise for the Naim label

Posted by: Trevor Newall on 18 February 2004

Just thought I'd scribble a few words to say there is some great music available courtesy of our friends in Salisbury. i'm beginning to find their software as addictive as their hardware.
What do others here think of the music available on the Naim label? What have you bought recently?
I've just recently got The Lipstick Conspiracies by Thea Gilmore, Foo Foo & The Boy H2C, Tom Gullion Greens And Blues, Antonio Forcione Touch Wood and Guilherme Vergueiro & Carlos Dos Santos Espiritu. all are excellent.
It's great to own hi-fi equipment from a company that clearly has such an interest in music. I doubt most of Naim's competitors could say the same!

Interesting post. I know this is a cliché but I’ve found the Naim material very absorbing – but not straight away. Maybe it was just being a bit musically narrow minded or something. At first I found the material a bit “noodley” but as I got into the different styles I found that I really started to like them a lot. I know its been mentioned ages ago but I would like to see some Naim re-issues of other labels stuff, but I think there would be problems with royalties and copyright? (Any comments Anna Tooth) Frank Zappa said once there are only 2 types of music – good or bad.

Hi Trevor, I've got most of the naim label discs, and though there are a couple that don't really push all my buttons too well the overall standard is good with some real gems.

Amongst those you haven't got I'd particularly recommend Charlie Haden & Chris Anderson/None but the Lonely Heart, Union/Union, any of the Ted Sirota discs and Fred Simon/Dreamhouse. Though Jim Lampi/Greazy is naim distributed rather than naim label it's well worthy of your attention. For the classical stuff, Concerts Under the Dome and A London Concert really do it for me.

Thanks for the comments folks. pete, I've noted your recommendations and they'll be on my next monthly buying list!
the other thing I would mention is the quality of the Naim label recordings, it is first class. don't you just hate it when good music sounds shite?

Thank you for all your positive comments.

We have more great music coming up, including a brand new album that we have recorded with Charlie Haden! Will let you know when this is available, should be in the next month or so.

Best regards

Anna is that Charlie Haden with John Taylor?

Read this interesting thread about Chris Anderson on Naim recently.Ken Christianson (sp?) really makes great recordings on and off the Naim label.

Hello Fred.
I didn't realise we had celebrities on the forum.
I think you can safely take what was said as a compliment!
Anna.
how many artists are available now on the Naim label, and who is responsible for their selection?
congrats on your efforts in promoting the music side of Naim btw.

Ive not heard any of the releases, but they all seem suitable for dad or grandad Big Grin Seeing as the Naim sound is all about rhythm and timing how about some Drum and Bass releases or some Detroit Techno. Im sure Naim want to appeal to a new generation too, theyve done that with the new 5i series of equipment but how about some music to go with it?

Well thats my thoughts anyway.

Play your Dad Earwax Control's 2 Live and he'll probably compain it isn't music at all... Though I wouldn't complain at some good raging techno on naim I'd question if other labels specilising in it may not be more attractive to the artists concerned of the sort of calibre you'd want?

The CDs of Forcione are excellent. I mean music and sound.
The last one is superb! Probably the best sounding CD from my collection.
