CD Catalogue Software?
Posted by: MontyW on 14 June 2006
Hi,
Can anyone advise me of software that can help me catalogue my CD collection? I would like to be able to catalogue my CDs on my Apple Mac and sync this with my Windows based PDA - can this be done?
Also, I would like a way of maintaining a 'wish' list on my PDA for when I'm trawling the stores - again if this could be sync with my Mac that would be great.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
David

Delicious Library from http://www.delicious-monster.com/
You can even scan in your CD's, etc, using the iSight web cam.
You can export to a text file, so that might cover your PDA requirements.

I and many others use Music collector. They have many products for CD/LP,DVD, Photos and books and more. There is an active forum that should be able to answer your specific questions if the website it self can't.
They keep the software updated and respond well to any suggestions re bugs or upgrades etc.
Check here
I hope this helps.

Create a database in MS Access, thats what I did. You maybe surprised to learn, that should your collection get stolen the insurance company will want proof that you owned such a vast collection.

Steve and Howard both your recommendations seem to be able to meet my requirements. Beano I could have a go at access, but I'm lazy However, thanks for making your point about insurance.

Another vote for Music Collector from me. It is excellent and very versatile depending on how you want to use it.

This is something I’ve been meaning to get around to for as long as I can remember. Prompted by these recommendations I've just done the research and ended up with Music Collector. Smashing. Only downsides are that if you’re adding manually it uses only Amazon for indexing (I have yet to discover if this can be modified) but of much greater peril is that I’ve found a number of special editions and remasters of CDs in my collection – this could get expensive if I don’t exercise some control!
And I seem to be sitting on a CD which is up for $999.99 on Amazon – although there’s no evidence that anyone’s been stupid enough to pay it!
My only regret is that I didn’t discover this excellent app before.
Thanks for the push.

Dear Harry!
This could be dangerous for me! Definately not going there! What if I discovered some of mine were valuable?
The temptation to realise the alleged price might be considerable! {Scrougish Smiley]!

You could use iTunes and keep a copy of all the trecks in AAC format (so it doesn't take up too much space) and it will. of course, connect Gracenote to get the track details. You can export the song list from iTunes in text format that you should be able to import in to your PDA.

I somehow can't get all that excited about "valuable" CDs, when you consider the skill and technology used in their production (or lack of it). I get the rare vinyl thing but can't help thinking that a rare and collectable CD can lose it's status in two days through the mere expedient of the label just burning a few thousand for pennies. And of course, as with most things, it's value is partly determined by how much some cheely monkey is willing to charge for it, and to a greater extent how much a mug is prepared to pay for it. Cynical? Moi?

It would be far easier to take a decent quality photo os the CDs in location. My insurer said thats what they need. I would guess they take your figure of say 1000 cds at todays prices. Lets face it apart from Now Thats What I Call Music volume 1, cds aren't worth toss anyway.

Looks like the new NAIM Music Server already has this feature built in...

Surely, just like LPs, the valus of CDs is not in the few pennies it cost to press the things, but in the content. Some are thus priceless, while others may not be. This is surely not related to the number pressed. An iPod is surely capable of containing priceless music...
I listened to some music through a very simple system earlier, and it gave me immense pleasure, just for the emotional message of what was contained. I believe the same impact will be achieved when this leetle machine serves as a cource here on day soon!

Fredrick, it might well be priceless to you but an insurance company does not care, its worth a tenner.

It's a thin line ain't it? The album in question has now gone off listing. I wonder if someone actually coughed up? It's a wonderfully remastered (Yes) album but at that price I'd mount it and charge people to look at it!

Dear Gary,
I cannot for the life of me imagine anybody wanting to steal my collection of music on CDs! They would have to be even madder than me! To like that stuff, and also be criminal: It does not stack up! Truth to tell £10 per disc is a good fifty per centum over-estimation of the replacement cost...
