Serenity (The Film)

Posted by: Stephen Bennett on 12 October 2005

Has anyone else seen it? I thought it was very good indeed.

If you like intelligent, moving, excitin and funny films (especially sci-fi) you really should catch Serenity before it leaves the cinemas. You don't need to have seen 'Firefly' (the TV series it's based on) to enjoy it as it's pretty self-contained.

Hi Stephen,

Yes - I saw it with my brother a few days ago. We were both big Firefly fans so we knew the type of thing to expect. I was impressed at how well the characters and their situation was re-introduced such that if you could get on with the story regardless of whether you'd seen Firefly or not.

The film has a good mix of humour and action, characters who are all very different from each other and actually has a plot. Me and my bro both enjoyed it. Worth a punt, I'd say.

Cheers!

Rich.

I thought it was pretty good and have never seen Firefly!

Hi Sicey,

If you liked the film then grab a boxed set of the Firefly DVDs - there are 14 episodes - you should enjoy them a lot!

I speak as someone who isn't into this kind of thing normally (my bro got me them for Christmas and I thought 'oh no, WTF?') When I sat down and watched one or two I really liked them.

Cheers!

Rich.

Fantastic movie - everything Revenge of the Sith should have been.

Seen it twice now, was better second time round as well. Might have been the fact that the second showing I saw was on a massive screen at UGC bolton.

Joss Whedon really knows how to play the audience. It is hard to say how without putting spoilers in so I won't. All I'll say is that this isn't a safe movie like Star Trek, their are real risks to these characters and Joss plays them superbly.

Will probably go again next week if it is still showing.

Saw it last weekend (also with my brother). I've got the series on DVD but he hadn't seen any of it. We both loved it, one of the best sci-fi flicks in a while and some very nice one-liners (along with a few nice plot twists).

My only complaint is that the first ten minutes (of, 'for those of you who didn't see the series') was a little redundent and pretty well everything you needed to know was explained again later anyway. Oh, and when do we get the sequel. Winker

Tam

Your first name wouldn't be River, by any chance?

If so, we should meet up...

On your saysos saw it today and it was great. The way scifi should be. Was a bit hard to sort out at first but a good plot and believable villain. Love those old broken down spaceships which they manage to patch up and "get in the air" again!!
Wide open for a sequel but regret that the nice guy was the one to bite the dust.

"What was that....."

Best bit IMHO.

I saw it the other evening and really enjoyed it. I haven't seen the series so I'll probably go and rent them.

I was a bit put off at first by the TV look and feel to it, but I was soon lost in the story. When will hollywood learn that you need more than fancy special effects for a film...

Hi folks,

Lomo - Please don't spoil the story!! For the record, for anyone who hasn't seen it, everyone gets killed, not just the nice guy... Big Grin

At risk of sounding like I'm in the employ of Joss Whedon (I'm not - I hated Buffy TVS by the way) don't rent but BUY the DVDs or put them on your Xmas list or something - the film was given the go-ahead following the high volume of DVD sales in the US. Continued DVD and Serenity sales will help to make a sequel possible (and having seen the original episodes there are plenty of story threads that could be developed).

It's only 21 quid - that's 1.50 per episode, plus you'll want to watch them all three times so that's 50p per viewing. Also you'll instantly grow nine new friends who'll want to watch them with you, so there you go, quality entertainment at an average of 5p per person per viewing... bargain!

Firefly on Amazon

Why am I doing this? - I don't particularly like sci-fi normally and I hardly ever watch TV or anything!? Confused Big Grin

Cheers!

Sorry Rich,
i thought I was the last to see it.
But sooooo sad.
Yep, they all bite the dust.
Posted on: 19 October 2005 by NaimThatTune
Lomo - no worries...
very sad, all dead, eaten by a trumped up plot line, which then died of indigestion, only it didn't know it was dead, and so went on to star in some sequels, and then 3 *pre*quels... Big Grin

Re the Firefly series: I watched disc 1 a few months ago, and was amazed that Joss Whedon (of Buffy fame)could come up with such an amateurish (IMO) first episode. I wasn't impressed by the other episodes but at least they held my attention. I can see why the show was cancelled, which is not to say I think it was a good thing to do - the powers that be in American TV seem to lack the ability to see a show's potential. Very sad.

I won't be watching the movie partly because I don't have a penny to spare (as is often the case) and partly because of the violence warning - but I hope everyone who goes enjoys it.

No. Sorry to disappoint. It's actually my middle name (everyone in my family uses their middle name, which causes no end of confusion with the bank, etc.).

As far as Whedon killing of his characters goes, he also has a reasonable knack for bringing them back, and this is sci-fi after all.

Second the advice about buying the DVDs rather than renting, money well spent. The first disc, in my view is the weakest, it only gets better: Jaynestown is particularly fine.

Hi Tam,

Damn... Thanks for the explanation, cool middle name - my middle name is 'Danger' (well, not really, but, when *I* have children... Roll Eyes)

I quite liked the original pilot and the substitute pilot too, but was aware of the need to fulfill the introduction of each character and the setting of the ship, so it all seems a little redundant on subsequent viewings.

Regarding the amateurish nature, Jeremy, I'm not sure in what way you felt it was lacking as you don't say, but the team specifically wanted to stray away from slick camera work with smooth running dollies etc in favour of a more rough and ready 'I filmed this at home on my cam-corder for Channel 4' type fly on the wall documentary feel. Apparently they had difficulty with the camera men being too steady with their hands! The shots of the Alliance world are by contrast produced using all the usual camera-steadying hardware, to purposefully give that anti-septic, slightly detached feel.

Or maybe that's got nothing to do with your assessment of amateurish and you just thought it was plain rubbish! (which is fine, I s'pose, mumble, grumble...)

Cheers!

Rich.
