Du Pré - Elgar Cello Concert
Posted by: andrea on 21 October 2009
Hallo every one.
I'm back to the Forum, to ask an advice.
I’ve seen there are so many versions of this famous concert, I mean issues.
I’m interested in Du Pré, Barbirolli, Elgar Cello Concert.
I guess it is not available on vinyl anymore.
But, even on cd, I noticed there are many different issues . . . could anybody advise on which one would be convenient to get, as for Hi-Fi quality?
Many thanks
and kind regard to all
Andrea

Dear Stu, very kind as always . . . yes, I have had enough of banging, and my neiboroughs too
Well, the bigger box set looks interesting for sure . . . .
I’ve seen somewhere, I think on Amazon, reviews made by customers, saying the first issue on cd was awful, while the last one was excellent. I’m simply not sure about which is which . . .
I see you’ve been on the forum a lot . . . .
Good.
Many thanks and talk to you soon

Hi Andrea,
Good to see you back.
Have you had enough of banging the drum kit this summer and need to listen to some good music
I only have the very best of 3cd set with the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor on it.![]()
Its a great box set.
You might want to get this great 17 cd box set?![]()
For around £17 thats a £1.00 a disc,Well worth it.
You can still get it on vinyl,The 1999 pressing.
It will cost around £20.00 for a used copy though.
Regards
Stu
I agree with the 3cd set but as yet have not heared the 17cd set.
Du Pre can also be found on vinyl in charity shops and boot sales.
I bought a copy on vinyl for £1.50
Jacqueline Du Pre & Daniel Barenboim:-
Haydn: Cello Concerto In C
Boccherini: Cello Concerto In B Flat
With The English Chamber Orchestra.
On HMV 2331

I wonder what are the conditions of this record . . it is very inexpensive, but at times, similar records I got, where simply unlistenable
Kind regards

No, but the Testament pressings are reputed to be good. I can't say, though.

Some turn out to be very good, once they have been put in a RCM.

I have this issue which was digitally remastered in 2004 and is reputed to be of excellent quality. See a review comment: EMI released this on CD back in 1986 (on CDC 7 47329 2) and the sound quality was disappointing to those brought up on the vinyl release. This time they have made amends - the sound quality is sensational. A back-room genius called Ian Jones has restored the dynamics and colour that made this a standout recording of its time. If you love this work and performance as I do, this release is worth every penny, even if you have the previous one.
I don't disagree. For example the plucked strings and stacatto cello in the second movement has the great dynamics that Du Pre generated.
Available from Amazon resellers for as little as 5.23. Which is great value, especially considering you also get:
Elgar's 'Cockaigne Overture' and Janet Baker singing 'Sea Pictures' thrown in.

Very good Geoff, this is exactly what I was looking for.
In fact, you're mentioning the same review I saw, you found it on Amazon, right?
Then you are able to confirm.
Great.
Many thanks, and best regards

By pure coincidence I have been playing the EMI version today at work on my laptop. As Geoff so rightly points out, not only do you get the Concerto but also the marvelous Janet singing the Sea Songs. Where Corals Lie is simply beautiful. I never tire of hearing it.

Hello Steve, and Michael . . .
your posts raise to me another question . . .
does the cd set advised by munch, include the Elgar concerto w Barbirolli/LSO?
Or it does not? And, furthermore, if the answer is yes, could anyone tell which version is it?
The very good one you're referring to, or the notsogood previous one?
Many thanks to all anyway
Best regards
Andrea

There is a superb and inexpensive EMI 5-CD set of Elgar's works conducted by Barbirolli (EMI Classics 3 67918 2). The Cello concerto is the DuPre/LSO/Barbirolli version, remastered in 2004.
Barbirolli recorded many of these works more than once, but this set seems to contain his best versions. When I bought it on Amazon, it was well under £10. It is entitled "Elgar Orchestral Works" but it does also contain the famous Janet Baker 1965 recording of Sea Pictures, again remastered in 2004.

Well, I could go for a vinyl myself, but only if in good conditions, as for the record, don't care much about cover, and at a very reasonable price

I've had mine from new. Hard earned university beer funds diverted to something more enduring - not that I realised that at the time.
Good hunting, p

I've just noticed you live in Rome. Do you ever get to Firenze? There's an excellent vinyl shop there (possibly called Abraxas?). He has a Gyro deck in the window and 1000s of good value records.

Thanks madasa . . . here it goes:
"Abraxas’ main activity is the release of vinyl records, and we are one of the world’s leading companies in this specific field. Along with the production and worldwide distribution of LPs, we have also begun releasing CDs." So in fact, they have a quite poor and badly organized on line catalog . . . and no, I do not go often to Florence . . . . for many reasons.
But, again, many thanks for the suggestion.
Where do you live?

I live in England.
I bought 3 LPs there and they were quite good quality - very heavy vinyl and cheap. It's the kind of shop I like - dozens of boxes of LPs at good prices and late 60s to early 70s music playing continuously.
