If that's in Hi-Fi news magazine, at Central Audio, don't bother, it was a misprint as I've already phoned the guy.

Try and obtain the serial number that should identify the age of the CD player.

It's certainly not a bad price but it all depends on the condition of the mechanism really. These are now obsolete and, while Naim still have a few refurbished ones, supplies are very limited.

I'd recommend a demo and trying to seek to tracks at either end of the CD to test if the mech is skipping or misreading the CD. Also check the Nextel ring for visual signs of wear.

You need to check the serial number. As far as replacing the mech goes, a CD2 with a serial number below 115000 has the same mech as the later CDI (flat puck version) and replacement is prohibitive at around £530. Serial numbers above 115000 have the same mech as the CD3, and replacement is around £330.

A service, which is basically a recap, should be done about every ten years and costs about £180. If it needs it, a DAC replacement is about £100.

It can all start to add up, although you may get away with no trouble at all. Remember, though, that a CDX can be had for upwards of £1,000 and they are totally servicable.
