Weakness or Strenght?

Posted by: Km on 22 March 2003

Hi all,
I've owned different brands of hi-fi(mainly low to mid priced) and finally managed to get my hand on Naim gear, I am very very happy person.
My current "sistem" consist of Cdx,102,Napsc,180 & Celestion A1 sounds very good, yes this is stating obious but what I mean is I actully listen to music rather than as a backround music which I used to do with my previous gears.
One thing I miss though is playing music during dinner which I think Naim isn't very good at or should I say it isn't meant for?
Is my positioning of speakers and other factors not right or should I just take Naim for what it is( Bloody good music maker) and get myself a cheap second system?

Regards,
Km

Howdy

Hope this might help, others in here know far more than I do.
I'am not (unfortunatly) very familiar with the better naim cdplayers. But: I've notiched that both the CDX and the CD2 are rather insistent, forward, and somewhat agressive. They seem to demand or insist upon your attention.
I find them detailed and fast, but I've notised the same, they are not for "easy listening".
That i believe is also a strength; it's not ment to be muzak.
Yesterday evening I was fortunately enough to listen to a cdx/xps 82/sc 250 allaes. A very fine system imho.
With the xps added, the cdx lost the hard and insisting edge, but at the same time it's strenghts were strenghted. Listening to piano music at low levels, as background music, was a treat. Smile It was much better with the xps, more details, more natural sounding, sweeter, more musical, sublte yet dramatic.
(This cdx had mostly been used with the xps, it might be that it is not properly run in on it's own (without the xps) and that was whats causing it's "weakness". Also this cdx had recently been moved, and according to it's owner sounded a bit brighter and harder in it's new location. I think the allaes are also a bit on the bright side, and a bit forward sounding, then again the room was sparsely furnitured.)

So (not unsurprisingly I suppose): tjek out a 2nd hans xps. Unless the cdx is stil young and has not yet setteled, in that case, give it a couple of months, keep it a way from magnetic iron, never turn off the power, see if things don't change. If not; audition the xps. Another possibility is to look at different speakers.
BTW: very shortly someone might start yelling "MANA!" or "FRAIM!" at you; brace yourself Smile I dont know anything about mana or fraim, exept that it can be somewhat expensive, but some of the good folks in here do..

(where's vuk: “just lower the volume at dinner time – good morning!”)

Just increase the volume of the dining persons.
Good evening!

I think the problem here is when the naim sistem is on he can't concentrate on his dinner!
