Eleanor McEvoy Unplugged

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 18 June 2008

Just got back from her concert at East Grinstead - absolutely brilliant.

EG is Theatre in the Semi-Circle; intimate. The set opened with a harp player and her sister singing folk songs.

EM came on with no backing - and she did use both electric lead and bass guitars, as well as amplified six string guitar, violin and drum; so maybe unaccompanied rather than unplugged.

It was not just her consummate musicianship that made the evening, it was the interludes between the songs where she was genuinely funny in a reflective way.

You even got to meet the lady herself as she sold her CDs at a table on the way out!

I was surprised at the age of the audience - made me almost feel young - and I think my 17 & 14 year old daughters we EASILY the youngest people I saw; we all made up with enthusiasm for the excess of experience, EM even got us singing along.

I bought 'Out There', the only CD she was selling I hadn't already got. of the numbers she performed tonight that are on this CD I preferred the live unaccompanied versions.

If you get the chance go and see her; Glastonbury tomorrow and up in Yorkshire in a few days; with the cost of diesel she may offer you a lift for some petrol money!

Any insight into Love Must Be Tough? New this year but still not around the US.

Love Must Be Tough

Hi Skip,

EM said that she penned the vast majority of her own work but that in LMBT she decided to record numbers that she loved. She pointed out that lyrics from many of these songs, such as I knew the Bride When She Rock & Rolled, took on a whole new twist when sung by a woman.

She performed the above, as well as 'Mothers Little Helper by The Rolling Stones & a Bob Dylan number.

She also did some of the new songs from the album, including 'Old New Borrowed & Blue', co-written with one Mr Rotheray.

I hoped to buy the new album, but she was not able to sell it - otherwise HMV would not stock it!

In fact I had tried to by it from HMV last week - and they didn't have it, which I poited out to EM when we had a quick chat afterwards.

I really wish she had recorded last nights session - I would by a live album like a shot!
