I'm on the verge of dumping for the Sony 999ES. It would pain me greatly to get one and then have Naim come out with a DVD/CD player.
I've been hanging out on this forum for year now - I have a right to know

Its been mentioned previously on this forum that Naim have two DVD players in the pipeline for launch this year.
Naim tend to launch their products either in May or September so the wait may not be that long.
Why not call Naim or talk to a dealer for confirmation.

I had an audition of the AV2 and NAPV175 recently (which was superb by the way) and in passing I asked about a naim DVD player. I was told by the dealer that naim was only spending 10% of their development time on it and he didn't beleive they would produce one until next year at the earliest IF THEN!!
so who do you believe? .... maybe naim would not always be so secretive and tell us what their intention is. This not knowing could lose them sales because I'm thinking of going the Cyrus AV route as they have an excellent processor, DVD player etc and they are less expensive.
I would like to keep to naim however - but! SO NAIM tell me about your DVD plans.
Cheers

Peter,
<<I was told by the dealer that naim was only spending 10% of their development time on it and he didn't beleive they would produce one until next year at the earliest IF THEN!!>>
I'm not sure where this has come from but as we're keeping things very close to our chest, I would take it with a big pinch of salt.
We are working on DVD and we have a player destined for launch sometime around September (all being well). I can't say any more than that but would suggest you don't go buying a new DVD player for the moment...

Richard,
Can I suggest that any DVD player produced has the facility to audio delay to cure lip sync problems. I know that the AV2 will be able to do this in the future but for people who can't afford the AV2 this feature would be invaluable. I know that the Arcam playes can do this with upto 50ms I think but generally upto 150ms would be great.

Those who can't/don't want to wait should also take a look at the new denon dvd-2900. it should cost a little less than the sony 999 and plays dvd-audio and sa-cd's.
For the moment I'm with my sony 900, but I have always an open ear... I dream of the above package with all dvd -/+ standards recording capabilities and a harddisk for time-shifting and cds3 sound/build quality
happy listening

...there is HD-DVD to worry about.
Given the meticulous R&D that Naim does with every piece of kit, I don't envy them in times of Format Wars.

...while I'm praying at the Alter of Naim, let the new player have scaling and stretching capabilities. The scalers built into TVs (yes - my Mitsubishi and even the mighty Pioneer Elites) is horrible compared to doing the job in the digital domain in the player.

And perhaps Naim can avoid the dreaded Chroma Bug while they are at it. Choose thy MPEG decoder carefully.

Damn and blast!!
I have just settled on a CDX2/200/202 combination .... does this mean that in September the CDX2 will become obsolete.
I have been hanging off waiting for Naim to bring out an SACD compatible player as I have quite a few discs already and they are brilliant.
It makes sense to have a one player-does-all machine.

Great! I can add another black box with green lights to my wish list.

I think the most important thing is to play DVD-Video with Naim-quality.
The ability to play different formats (DVD-Audio/SACD) is not so important.
My wishes concerning DVD-Video are: Progressive scan, codefree, and a DVI output!

Very retro this, but how about making the DVD player available in the old case style too? This should be easy enough to do if the consideration is factored in at the design stage.
Many of us have old-style gear and maybe others would, like me, baulk at buying a single unmatched item while being happy to shell out straight away for an old-style variant.

Hi Thomas,
Perhaps you haven't heard SACD yet. Even in stereo format it is pretty stunning and it would be a shame for Naim to introduce a new style player which is no able to take advantage of new formats. God knows, it cant' be very difficult ... all the Japanese players can do it.
The other interesting new development it the Direct Digital circuit between player and preamp such as Pioneer are now doing with their AX10i HT amp and 757i DVD/DVD-A/CD/SACD player.
I've herad it in the shops and the "i" connection is very noticeably superior.
I can't comment on DVD-A because I havent heard it yet.
Cheers,
