John,
I am sure that if Linn can make a multi purpose player then Naim can,but isn't it better to be a specailist in one field rather than ordinary in everything else.

Ozren and JohnMark!
In my opinion one component should only treat and concentrate on one task to make the best of it.
I am afraid that the video section could affect the audio section and vice versa.
Therefore - if you want the DVD-audio and/or SACD ability - Naim should build a seperate player for best quality.
Besides i think there is not very much software for DVD-A and SACD.

Sorry but I am on the side of Ozren & John Mak.
If you want to get all the way back to basics, to be purist about it should'nt Analog circuits and Digital circuits as seen in Naim CD players be kept seperate?
I know it is all about levels of reasonableness. But that said modern electronics can deal with and keep video and audio speperate AND decode the different signals in one or two boxes with high quality. if you try hard enough at the design stage.
If its OK to have two boxes for the seperate power supply argument what's wrong with multiple boxes for audio & video?
SACD and DVD-A can both be very good based on what I hear in my system. It is not going away. Think of it as a great second topic for argument once you have worn out the Vinyl vs CD argument.

If we can have all formats without loss of quality then it´s o.k. - and cheaper!

It's got to be Multi-Region with PAL and NTSC progressive scan.

TRRK,
unfortunately I have to remain tight-lipped on the DVD player. I have already given an indication of what the target price is (approx 40% up on a CD5).
I'm afraid you'll just have to wait for the first showing in September (production units should start shipping around January).

Hi Richard,
I notice in another thread you said you were aiming to unveil the DVD at the London Hi-Fi show in September.
Thing is, there are two hi-fi shows the same weekend (we discussed this at HQ) and I notice Naim is on the list of exhibitors for both.
So will the DVD be at both, and if only one, which will it be?
Or has one of the shows been called off and now I look silly?
Cheers!
Richard.
Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have. Be careful how you spend it lest others spend it for you.

I've recently bought an Arcam DV88, and plan to stick with that.
There was one feature that was an absolute requirement for me :- multi-region.
The unit also has a nice zoom feature to allow letterbox format pictures to be grown (with the edges chopped off) to suit a TV.
I won't be going for the Naim unit at this point in time, but I do hope that it has the above.

I'm not sure where this has come from but as we're keeping things very close to our chest, I would take it with a big pinch of salt.
We are working on DVD and we have a player destined for launch sometime around September (all being well). I can't say any more than that but would suggest you don't go buying a new DVD player for the moment...
Richard
Welcome to the real world! (of non-stereo systems). Let's see if Naim can compete with Sony, Pioneer in this sector. Their DVD players are very good for the price paid.

So what do I have to gain by purchasing a Naim DVD player? What is the advantage compared to say a Toshiba or Sony? Bear i mind that I (shockingly) use the DVD player to watch films and that most of these are mono (Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strwberries in surround ho, ho...).

Does this mean we'll be getting a "movie room" forum in september as well then?

Folks - do we really believe that a DVD player will sound better than a dedicated CD unit?
I don't see it myself.
The primary job of a DVD player is to play movies.

Hey RussianKid -
Nope - didn't plumb for the Sony. A bit of research on the 'net turned up all kinds of nasties in the video section of the player, nasties that, on our 55" tele, would matter.
The Sony's strong suit is (supposedly) Red Book CD playback. Getting it would probably mean that I would *not* get a stand-alone CD player, so good redbook performance is important to me.
Trouble is, I've heard a CD5 in my system. My Sony ES series CD player sounded broked for four days after that. Hard to forget...
As to why a Naim DVD player at all, well, I would expect unsurpassed audio from my DVDs with such a player and Red Book performance that would satisfy at the CD5 level. All the better if it will accept an external PSU, such as the feed from the FlatCap 2.

I'd have to agree with that. From reviews I've seen from another hi-fi specialist, the Arcam dv88 (model that has just been replaced by the 89) was supposedly about as good for cd's as Arcams entry level cd player.
Judging from that I'd be very surprised if naim's upcoming dvd player will be as good as the cd5, but only time will tell.
Another question for Richard or the other people at naim: will we be able to see demo versions of the dvd player at official dealers before next year?
It's just I will probably be getting a new dvd player in the next couple of months and would consider the naim, but at that price I'd want to see it against the competition before stumping up the cash.
and prowla I see you have just got a dv88, what's it like? what are you using it with (for sound and picture)?

Hey Scott-
Before you drop caysh for the Sony, take a good look at the Denon DVD2900. It plays all the formats the Sony plays, but unlike the Sony, it sounds pretty good (all Sony HiFi stuff is absolutely the worst crap on the market - they must be absolutely deaf!!!)
Email me if you want.

My dv88 isn't the new plus model, and it's not got progressive scan (it can be upgraded with a board though). It was almost an impulse buy; our old Panasonic player started acting up, I saw some good deals on the Arcam (£500 new)(UK retail proces include, tax BTW), so I bought it.
I'm just running it into a normal 4:3 TV at the moment, including sound. A Hi-Fi dealer I've used (Audience, Bath, UK) runs the prog scan version with a plasma screen in the shop and it looks great.
I'm happy with it. (It's one of those "if I lost it for any reason I'd just replace it with another of the same" things.)
The only niggle I've got is that there is a noticeable delay (10-20 sec?) from switching it on from standby to the drawer opening so you can put the disk in.
