The main focus of the day was for customers to hear the top end linn set up. The CD12, klimax preamp, klimax amps and komri speakers. To me this kit sounded fantastic - you might say for 50K plus it should do but either way it did. I'm not so good at reporting the relative merits and demerits of such kit but for me it achieved a clarity with vocals that was pretty breathtaking. The kit looks petty cute too. Lee and I were disappointed that we will have to wait three months for our new speakers.

The company

A number of individuals from linn were there. Including the guy that designed the komri , their sales manager and the boss/founder. They were happy to chat about the business, the kit,the habit,AV vrs 2 channel, the lp12 etc. It was very interesting. A few snipits of info we were able to glean - a new 1.8k mc cart is released today and 'two or three new things for the TT coming out over the next few months'. Wouldn't say what though.

The legendary Trampolin is to be replaced by an inflatable bladder - air, helium, water, crude oil, its your choice - called the Zepplin.

Cirkus bearing now upgraded by retrofit Bouncykastle tweak.

Undetachable mains filter in new 9.5WeekesLingo.

Old style decks to be improved with Nordost arm cable - Valhalla Valhalla.

I think Alex managed to hit one of the improvements on the head. It's been a rumour for about the past 6 months that the Cirkus bearing will receive a massive upgrade.

A fascinating afternoon's listening at Ian Anderson's (no, not that Ian Anderson, this one's the owner of Billy Vee in Lewisham). Went with a mate of mine who is a regular customer there and very much in their target market for the new kit.

The price of the CD only system was actually £67,000 and at that price you would be entitled to expect something pretty darned good and indeed it was but sixty seven grand!!.

Initially the system consisted of CD12, System Controller, 2 pairs of Klimax 500's and the Komri's. It sounded OK but nothing special and certainly not in the same league as the 552/500/SL2 demo's I had heard. However, the introduction of the Klimax pre made a hell of a difference and allowed the Komri's to start performing at their best. Could I live with it? Yes. Would I spend £67,000 on it? If I had the money I'd be inclined to look at the CDS11/552/500/SL2 and buy a Boxter with the change.

Clearly the pre-amp is something quite special and I'm looking forward to hearing what will be a more realistic comparison between a 552/500 and the Klimax Pre/Klimax - that's going to be the real test.

Yes, it was. They had clearly gone to a lot of trouble - food, wine tasting, Ivor in attendance, very tasty Turron in the listening room.

I've heard that same kit over here two weeks ago and all I can say is that they should divide the price by five to be honest. Remarkable clarity and purity, but by far the DULLEST system we heard that day.

BTW, our star of the day was a little pair of Wilson Benesch Arc's - for 3k including stands.

Ah yes...well, hmmm, the music. Not the best selection, I'm afraid. Crystal, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald (which was OK). Fortunately we'd taken a couple of things - the new James Taylor album and Nils Lofgren Live.
