Humans are prone to make errors and instictively not to admit to anything.

Shot seven times in the head (and once in the shoulder) is a bit excessive though don't you think!!
Never mind the three bullets that missed him......
Shoot first ask questions later......

You think so?
Depends upon what you think you are actually faced with at the time...IMO
Unless you were in that situ, do you know how you would react?

Sadly par for the course when it comes to Police shootings, regardless of circumstances. But the media will make a meal of anything - most of the hysteria comes from that direction and you have to wonder what the truth really is - because you won't get it from the press.

Sunday Times - interesting reading.
Key points which stand out are :
- the only suspicious thing Menedes did was get on and off a bus (possibly because there were no seats available).
- he was wearing a light denim jacket/shirt (probably like thousands of other travellers that day). He wasn't carrying anything other than his mobile phone and a Metro paper he picked up at Stockwell tube station. So he had nothing that looked like a bomb and was not wearing clothes that allowed him to conceal a bomb.
- he walked normally through the ticket barriers at Stockwell and started to run down the escalator when half way down as he could hear the train approaching the platform.
- he'd already phoned a friend to say he might be late for his appointment to fit a fire alarm due to the travel delays.
- he was sat down two seats away from the surveillance officer reading his Metro paper when the surveillance officer got up and shouted at the tube door to the following armed squad that "he was here". At this point Menedes stood up and the survellance officer restrained him by pinning both arms to his side. The Sunday Times indicates that the surveillance officer was surprised when one of the armed officers shot Menedes as he had him under restraint.
- neither the armed officers or the police surveillance officer prior to the shooting issued any form of caution to Menedes. All were dressed in plain clothes with no identification.
- seven bullets were shot into the back of Menedes head - apparently all in the same place as in the mortuary the wound was able to be covered by a small plaster/bandage.
- the police knew more or less immediately that they'd shot an innocent man and yet made no attempt to correct the false information being reported. In fact they seem to have been party to this false information.
- the Police Comissioner resisted attempts to have an independent inquiry as he did not want his officers distracted in these dangerous times.

Profoundly worrying, I agree.
And we can't re-invade Iraq to distract attention. Perhaps we should go for Iran?

The Iran invasion is off until the Republicans win an election.
