Squeezebox touch

I was just wondering if anyone has done a side by side with this and a MF Vdac? In terms of Sound Quality, the differences?
I'm close to buying one(touch). I'll use it's onboard dac to begin with, in the hope one day to stream from it to a ndac.
In the meantime it would be to replace my vdac and allow me to play 24/96.
Cheers.

another quick question?
If i have my 24/96 files on an external hard drive and have this plugged into the touch via USB, will it stream 24/96?
This is something i have never been able to have clarified.

Yes but I find it a bit bright or glassy overall.

realy, with a ext. Hd plugged via Usb to the Touch?
I dont think so, then you would be the first i know.
It works when you use a server, but when you use a ext. Hd via USB, you get every 10 sec rebuffering.
Its my personell experience and everybody who has tried it had the same result, when you read the squeezebox forum.
Even when you play normal Flacs there is a rebuffering on the first song of an album, then its okay.
This is the reason why i switched to a WHS Server based system.

So guys Ethernet is the way to go yeah?
Basically, I'm in the running for one of the naim approved NAS drives anyway, that's the goal you know, it's just that the USB external HD is what i have at the minute.

Anything in terms of SQ??
I quite like the vdac, for the money, it's great, It's certainly no where near where i wanna be, not close, but i still wouldn't like to take a step down in SQ with the touch, the thing being it's 24/96 I wanna access more of!

When you use a server, best direkt LAN, second Wifi or Powerline??.
Think also about a WHS Server, its imho easier to run than a Linux based NAS.
Most NAS didnt have the power to run the SB-Software.
And when there will be a new software version from SB, you cant run it immediatly, because first there must be programmed a new software version for the NAS.

Right, OK, jeeso i'm trying to move in this direction to make life easier and already it's throwing up problems! (ah...if money was no object!)
I'm running Foobar just now, with Asio, it's bit perfect!
I want 24/96....
and the whole computer route, is a hassle in all honesty..
If the nas needs to be linux then the nas needs to be linux?

Glad you like it. It's OK with a smoother dig cable but yes both with direct USB or ethernet I would prefer a Sonos if on a that budget. I even tried a linear PS. All with wav and no resampling. Same impression I had on an earlier sample that a customer brought in but I wanted a unit to play with to be sure so I actually bought one to try again. I like the idea of HiRes streaming but I'd really rather listen to a Sonos in standard def. My opinion and I don't mind being first to have it at all.

mmmm Sonos.
But does it do 24/96??

OK OK, i think i've been put off that Sonos!
I walked into a hifi store in the last year and one was in use, in whatever way it was configured (I would imagine to try and sell devices) it ended up with a set of B&W Bookshelves on the end of it..now I don't know what I didn't like about it all, it wasn't why I was there and I didn't get into it, but it all just sounded, well not very good!
Tinny, trebley, airy, light thin and useless!!
Prob not the Sonos fault if what I'm hearing is right from you guys, but I'm also hearing quite alot from high res music files so.....

Sonos isn't perfect either but it doesn't get in the way.

Hi Gypsykirk -
IMHO, the MF V-DAC has very respectable sound quality. Have not tried a Touch, but my V-DAC was a significant step up from the SB3's internal DAC.
You may want to go Touch->S/PDIF->V-DAC until you can afford to replace the V-DAC with the Naim DAC.
Good luck!

I agree with js on this, bright and glassy. I kept mine for less than a fortnight. SB Touch/Ndac came a very poor second to Mac Mini/Ndac. Its screen is too small for viewing at more than 10 feet.

no it doesnt. ,but till the streaming system settles down. the sonos z90/iphone ,,,cheap,,,the quality is far better than some would admit to,via the ndac... anyway when will we have a massive catalogue of high res albums. most availble are just albums already there on cd

Yeah, I preferred it to the dacmagic! side by side...quote:IMHO, the MF V-DAC has very respectable sound quality
I have an iphone, is there not an app I can use to control it? I currently use the apple remote for foobar.quote:Its screen is too small for viewing at more than 10 feet.
Yeah, I do see your point here, I spent a large part of yesterday over at HDtracks and I must admit there's alot there i would like and the samples sounded great, without even being 24/96..but there's alot you would expect to be 24/96 by now that's not!quote:anyway when will we have a massive catalogue of high res albums
Computer audiophile states (touch) it's bit perfect, am I in danger of heading off into previously run into the ground discussions here, if i ask how it can sound "glassy" hahaha...Could that be cables? or system specific behaviour..mmmm this isn't easy is it?
I could probably pick up an older mac mini on ebay for the price of a touch in fairness, i hadn't really considered that.

rDAC is actually looking promising!
Kind of kills all the little birds with one stone!
I see the chip in it, is the same as used in the Klimax and Akurate too !!!

I wonder if the new Squeezebox Touch can send bit perfect data via its USB port to an asynchronous USB DAC?
Posted on: 15 August 2010 by pcstockton
nope.

Search the Squeezebox forums - someone was looking at getting htis to work - theoretically it is possible.

Thanks Eloise! Yes, I read somewhere that this was possible with a firmware update but had no details how. Will check the Squeezebox forums!

My guess is that it wont happen. It's a upnp streamer so I suspect it will both be difficult and of limited value overall due to the protocals.
