Squeezebox touch
Posted by: gypsykirk on 13 August 2010
I was just wondering if anyone has done a side by side with this and a MF Vdac? In terms of Sound Quality, the differences?
I'm close to buying one(touch). I'll use it's onboard dac to begin with, in the hope one day to stream from it to a ndac.
In the meantime it would be to replace my vdac and allow me to play 24/96.
Cheers.

When you use a server, best direkt LAN, second Wifi or Powerline??.
Think also about a WHS Server, its imho easier to run than a Linux based NAS.
Most NAS didnt have the power to run the SB-Software.
And when there will be a new software version from SB, you cant run it immediatly, because first there must be programmed a new software version for the NAS.
Maybe worth taking a look at the VortexBox project. This is a distribution dedicated to playback and serving (HQ) music. It includes an automatic ripping system (like ripNAS) or you could just store dbPowerAmp (etc) rips from your PC. This is Linux but all is hidden behind a web-based front end.
You can either buy a pre-configured low-powered device, or run it on an old computer (or build your own).

Eloise. Can it be configures to rip to wav instead of FLAC or would you need to convert after rip if you prefer to play from wav as required with the ripNAS?

Yes, its a bit of playing in text files but you can get the Vortex box to keep the WAV files it uses for encoding.

Yep, had one all day. Just spent the evening listening to it via USB driven from foobar configured with ASIO4ALL.
Was totally lost in the music.

Hi Likesmusic -
Was just looking at the rDAC's specs. Any idea why it only supports 44.1/48 via optical?
Thanks.

not a clue Hook, sorry. The wireless configuration is also restricted - to 16 bit. Nonetheless it's a cute little thing for the money - I bought mine online so have 7 days to play; it'll only cost me the postage if I don't keep it. It is very frustrating not being able to put it on a network.

thought you could upgrade with a wireless plug in board and dongle.quote:Originally posted by likesmusic:

Sure you will be able to upgrade it (not sure when) to work wirelessly from a USB port, but that still means having to go to that pc to control things. I'd prefer a DAC that was straight on the network, like Logitech, Linn and Sonos. It is very good for the money though, and a good way of getting going or beefing up a Squeezebox or the like. I just think the async wireless USB is a dead-end.

i use sonos z90 /ripnas/iphone via the ndac .i like sonos system it is very stable, although i dont use optical the quality 16 bit is very close to the cdp. not able to download high res via sonos .

Network is the way to go for me too. My (£100) blu ray is on my network, my plasma tv is on my network, my apple Touch is on my network, my phone is on my network, my squeezeboxes are on my network, my pcs and laptops are on my network .. guess where I would want a naim DAC to go!?

On a Fraim connected to an Unitiserve?
Your pre, power, speaker etc, aren't on the network. Why should the DAC?

.. but the Unitiserve is on the network, (for it is a UPnP server is it not?), the devices which it serves connect to the network .. why shouldn't the DAC (or indeed DACs) connect to the same network and receive data from the Unitiserve? Or any other server? You don't connect your printer to your laptop do you?
Anyhow, lets see what the September announcement brings ..

:-D...My life!!
I think the idea here is...because the big selling point is the Asynchronous USB 24/96...the optical is to attach a CD player..playing 44.1 16 bit red book CD's....quote:Was just looking at the rDAC's specs. Any idea why it only supports 44.1/48 via optical?
I'm not concerned about wireless...I don't really trust it enough. I like wired! for the time being...
I think this little DAC would be a logical financial progression for me right now and also great plug and play USB solution for HD tracks.
Think I'll buy an try!

gypsykirk - you've nothing to lose; you can send it back if it's not for you. What player would you use with it? - I tried foobar with ASIO4ALL - followed the set-up guide on the dCS website, since it's their technology.
Didn't really like losing my laptop to it though, so am alsorunning it driven from a squeezebox, controlled by iPeng on my apple Touch; rather more convenient!

Well...if i get the rdac and nac a5 together, the next thing is a nas really!
When i get everything off the pc, i will put windows 7 on it with foobar and wasapi,I'll have have a 250gb hard drive and 1gb ram.
In the meantime my hard drive is full and so is my external, not good!, I'm using foobar asio4all and windows xp.
So really, it's foobar just now (flac :-( would prefer wav but hey ho, asio4all, vdac (soon to be rdac) etc......
Controlled by apple remote or logitechs touch mouse on the iphone or manually at pc

Might be worth hanging on till Cambridge Audio bring out their 24 bit network music player - it's supposed to be coming in Autumn

mmmm i've a feeling bout this rdac, it has good stuff going on in that price bracket!! Personally i think it's somewhat filled a gap in the market...i stuck with the vdac over the dacmagic, there are things the vdac doesn't do but there are things it does do very well!!
So what do you think of this rdac??? what can you compare it with ?

Streamer/network wise, if i could afford it right now I'd buy a transporter i think, second hand and give that a whirl, cos from it's reviews around here it seems to me like bargain kit, again killing a few birds with one stone!!!
Cheers.
