Need Source recommendation after Pioneer Elite DV-05 Died

Posted by: Taylormade on 29 September 2003

System:

Nait 2
Kan IIs
Theta DS Pro Basic
Pioneer Elite DV-05 (DEAD)

I would greatly appreciate a recommendation for a replacement for the DVD player. It was a good sounding transport with the DAC but now I'm having difficulty finding a suitable DVD player less than $500 that will work with my system. One option I'm considering is getting a CD3 hand-me-down at no cost and buying a DVD changer for movies and music when quality doesn't matter. If I go with the CD3, then I'll sell the Theta and put the additional money toward the DVD player.

Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks!

Not an absolute recommendation but a comment.

I have had a couple of DVD players and a SACD player which all were used as CDP's a bit aswell. My current DVD (a Pioneer 939A which also does DVD-A) claims to upsample CD to 96/24.
What does that do for the sound? In my opinion not a lot!! It all sounds a bit bright and brittle
Anyway none of these machines ever came anywhere close to producing the quality of music offered by any of the Naim CDP's.

I'd go for the CD3 anyday. Especially since for movie playback if the quality doe'snt matter mauch DVD players are reaally cheap if that's all you need from them.

Thank you for the advice Geoff. I agree that going for the CD3 makes more sense than trying to use a DVD player as my main CDP.

One of these days, we'll actually get a glimpse of the Naim DVD player and then one of these years, I'll be able to afford one. Smile

Yep - I reckon a multi-purpose DVD ain't going to come near to a CD3.
