Capacitor's" Sourcing"

Posted by: raymond on 02 December 2002

Hello to all, my power amp needs re-capping, I require the following value, 17,000uf, 80volt or as near as possible. I have tried to source them from Maplin and Farnell without success. The manufacturer of the amp has long since gone. The power amp is 25 years old so a recap is way overdue. Anyone know of an off the shelf supplier?
Regards
Raymond.

The exact capacity isn't too important, apart from anything else there's a huge tolerance on electrolytic caps.

The big questions are voltage, ripple current and size. 80v seems very high for an audio amp

I would be surprised if RS didn't have something suitable, 381-9122 for example. http://rswww.com/

Thanks Paul, ill check RS out. Yes 80v seems high but it's an american power amp delivering 600watts r.m.s.into 2ohm and around 400 into 4ohms, the laminated transformer is massive and the amp never gets warm even driving Isobariks.

Raymond.

What can it be? From your text one guesses that it's a brand that has gone out of business.

- GAS?
- Phase Linear?
- or?

It will have power rails in excess of 56v, so a 63v cap is definitely marginal.

Hello JohanR, the power amp is a Dunlap-Clarke, Dreadnaught 500 and yes it's american, imported by Exposure Electronics before they made there own amplification products. Circa 78. Have you heard of one?

Hello Paul, I have located the caps on RS, 100v, 22,000uf but are fairly expensive at £31.50 each.
