Did this forum lose its punch?

Posted by: Arye_Gur on 05 April 2010

Few years ago, there was no title " " FORUM RULES - Please Read & Follow."." and the forum was much more "alive". I remember the very "hot" argues like about steps that were taken by Naim - like the new shape, like argues about the directionality of a... fuse, articles and photos about modification to Naim equipment, Vuk claiming that the Fraim is based on his idea, members telling that Mana rack is a better upgrade than going from 82/180 to 52/250. all around, things were much more "sparkling".

I read this forum almost on daily base - but I can't "feel" it like before. Adam's rules are kept well but the liveliness that is one of the very best feature of my Naim system - is lost in the Naim forum.

The forum seems to be like a branch of the Naim spoke man. Many times I ask myself - why to hell this member doesn't ask Naim this question? They answer quickly, in details and they are very polite. For sure they have the best knowledge about their own equipment.

Many people are asking about Naim on other forums (few are asking the same question in both forums). The idea is that on other forums the answers are more objective. I don't think that it is a good idea for Naim and for this forum to keep hard rules here and let the "open" world (people who can think about other pieces of equipment but Naim) thinking that this is not the place of receiving "true" answers about Naim and its competition in the view of Naim's lovers.

Reading other forums makes me believe that I'm not the only person on earth who thinks so.

So I'm asking Adam: Lose the rules in a way that will keep this forum as a Naim one but will bring life back to this place.

And if my feelings are not true, nothing happens. I will not relate too seriously to this forum but I'll stay with my Naim system and with the thought and feeling that Naim are manufacturing great stereo systems and not so great forum to chat about their products in.

Perhaps all threads in the Padded Cell should be locked when they start the third page which is when the vitriol starts to appear.

Also all posts over 50 words should be automatically truncated

Who's alter ego though that is the question?
What do you know ODBL?

Stu,

some of the best debates on this forum were in the aftermath of 9/11, so I don't think that's it. It's precisely because most workplaces have the same unspoken rule that the political discussions on here can be so educational.

Mick's probably on the money here;
quote:
Arye was lamenting the more vibrant past of the forums history which is different to what it is today. The positive side of the old days was that the topics were discussed to a much higher standard and were a lot more interesting. The downside was that the discussions became a bit heated and too many insults got hurled about. Friday's were sometimes like a battleground.
although I seem to recall he got at least as excited as anyone else and it could all be very very funny sometimes. I remember someone - was it Don? Maybe another Don - tried to get a fellow member banned for threatening to doorstop him with an anti-tank missile. Oh how we laughed. I expect you had to be there.

^ I remember the HUGE opprobrium when I suggested, on a non-hifi Forum, that following the London bombings it might be reasonable for a person travelling on the underground to be nervous should a person of apparant Middle eastern extraction board a tube train wearing a green headband and carrying a backpack.

I can see where you are going Mike, but he was not me and neither am I him. I haven't got the time, patience or mind set to post the sort of stream of consciousness stuff he came up with.

In terms of who I thought he might be, I did for a while think it may have been the Moderator having some fun....

Cheers

Excellent suggestion Derek! Looks like you have just the "Right Stuff" for this forum moderation lark...

Hope you're well!!

Can you spot the possible oxymoron here?

Blimey - this got me thinking about some of the posters one used to get on here - Vuk, Nick Lees, Stallion (snigger), that guy David Simpson(?) who had a gigantic collection, some others whose names escape me right now...

The one I miss is Matthew Robinson. A Hammer and a good guy.

I never got involved with those stand flame wars, they were baffling and pointless as far as I was concerned but they were great fun to watch. Have to agree, things are a lot quieter around here these days...

Pc fear and uptightness to blame perhaps?

Hello Dave - deffo rememember you from some recent posts. I don't think it was you though come to think of it (sorry). I think it was David Slater.

He was a big Throbbing Gristle fan. Which I may venture you are not Big Grin.

Rasher - whatever happened to him?
Posted on: 06 April 2010 by David Scott
Vuk and, in a strange way, Stallion are the ones I miss. Then there was Mike Hanson's obsessive defense of leaving the display off on his cdx and Mick hounding Mr Pig all over the internet. And Beelzebub, who caused more trouble than the lot of them put together. What a hoot.

Kevin, David - much of what you speak occurred before my time on this forum but occasionally I look back at those threads from the distant past and concur that there was certainly something about this place which, IMHO, is not there now.

Stallion can still be found if you look far enough - he had to start his own forum in the end! Matthew Robinson, Vuk and Bub, amongst others, have de-camped to other forums too. Mr Pig, I seem to recall, tried to escape Mick's attentions by seeking refuge in the Mana forum, but when that died, so I think did we see the last of him.

LOL...Throbbing Gristle...sounds like p()rn:-)

I had a huge record collection that I sold right before the forum started but not sure if I ever mentioned it here.

Not only wondering about Rasher, but what happened to Martin Payne?

I'm only here a wet day and have to agree there is a touch of the seven year itch about the place.

Tam from the music room I miss, along with a few others whose names escape me.

There is also a bit too much "are you around tonight Bill ? - I'll phone you later mate" touchy feely stuff for my liking.

I suppose the fact I'm still here and posting stands for something, but I'm not as enthused as I was before.

SJB,
You're right. I hadn't really thought about it, but this kind of private business seems out of place in a public forum. Stop saying you're going to phone them and phone them, people!
