Manual clarification please .. Naim UnitiQute, Settings/ Speakers/ Type

Posted by: PhilW on 03 December 2010

There are three choices here: small, large, or "none".

Here's what the manual says:
quote:
"Select the Large option when the UnitiQute preamplifier
output is connected to an external power amplifier or to a subwoofer used to augment the low frequency performance of large (full bandwidth) speakers.

Select Small only when the UnitiQute preamplifier output is connected to a subwoofer used to provide the low UnitiQute Setup frequency component of a speaker system incorporating small (restricted bandwidth) satellite speakers. When
Small is specified, a 100Hz high-pass filter is applied to the
UnitiQute speaker output signal."

I don't have an external power amp or a sub woofer, so I don't want "large" it seems. But then reading the text for "small" I don't want that either.

"None" is easy: it makes no noise.

Ok, I should be able to just try it and listen, but I've a pile of variables to play with and I'd like to have this set right to start with. "large" seems to work, although if my girlfriend asks, they're definitely "small".

Does anyone have any idea what this setting is for and what it should be set to?

Go Large assuming you do not has little satellite speakers. I have 'small' Neat Motive 2 floorstanders and am using 'Large' which puts a smile on my face. Smile

I also have mine set to large. Harbeth C7es3's (neither large nor small). Maybe there should be a medium setting? Smile

Leave as Large unless you are using a sub connected to the Qute's RCA phono outputs. Season to taste; the bass management is done in the analog domain.

For large, read 'full bandwidth'. If you have proper hi-fi speakers go for this. Small is just for satellite speakers which have a limited bandwidth (hence bass below a certain frequency is redirected to the pre-amp out for connecting a sub).

Thanks all, large it is. Unless I'm questioned on it of course, in which case they're small (PMC DB1i).
