Is the MySpace music section the way of the future?

Has anyone used Myspace to find out about new music? I’ve not used to search for new stuff – picking a genre and trying to find something new seems too much like hard work to me, although I keep meaning to give it a go. It is useful though to listen to samples from people who you’ve not heard but have read about – I discovered Alborosie that way. It’s also good for checking out the side projects of people – for example Move D has several pages for his various projects which I hadn’t heard of otherwise. You can also pick up some good CD rarities off it – so far I’ve got some great CD’s by Soma and Sigillum S that are only available via MySpace - but I was directed towards them from Bill Laswell websites.
Maybe we should set up a register of pages that we would recommend. Bill Laswell’s sub-projects like Painkiller, Praxis and Scorn have good pages with decent samples.

Yes, definitely.

I've discovered a few bands or artists through MySpace. Also what I find is I go to one page and then start clicking on some of their top friends and discover even more! Also it's a great way of finding out more about an artist in general as well and often you can even "talk" to them!

My favourite recent finds, although I have yet to find many people who share my enthusiasm for them!, are:

Emmy The Great

Cute lyrics (if you like songs about car crashes and vaginal discharge Eek )
and a rare intelligence, she just has a way with words that makes me laugh out loud, smile, cry and ponder and sometimes all in the same song. Also check out this on youtube :

The Black Cab Sessions

Next...

Slow Club

I love the videos to their singles as well. The first one was alledgedly made for £16!

Also, quite like these guys...

Black Kids

And, there's a good local Northampton band, who I have to confess I knew before visiting their MySpace page but I really like nonetheless

Invocal

Probably none of these will ever make the big time proper, but they've given me more enjoyment than U2 ever could.

Yes - frequently.

This forum and Amazon frequently recommend music - MySpace is a great way to try a few tracks and decide if it is for me.

Also, if I recommend a record then I try to include a MySpace link because I realise that what I may think is the latest and greatest may not be everybody's cup of horlicks.

The one problem I have is that I like so much of the new stuff I hear that I neither have the time nor the wonga for all of it - plus there is a lot of old stuff I still enjoy.

So much music ... so little time

But yes, MySpace is an excellent place to sample music IMHO.

She is re-releasing her album with the extra track in two weeks. I hope she's working on a new album.

BTW what do you think of Jo Mango - MySpace click here?

I use Myspace as a honey-trap. I started an account there and added a few bands as friends, whereupon other bands come to me because I am "friends" with someone they thought they were like. If you get what I mean.

Many are (deeply, deeply) crap, but I've discovered many very good ones that way. The maintenance is very low and you just Deny the crap ones.

I've also made contact with many artists through being their "friend" and have struck up good relationships with several that way.

A plug for les inrocks. Is that allowed?

By the way, the website has an interesting article on the "vinyl counterattack". With apologies for any mistranslation (schoolboy French), it mentions a band giving away the CD with its LP and labels that won't bother with a CD or give away the MP3 download with the LP. Back to the future!
